One of my favourties in the city, a great place to sit and wind down with a good pint. Always a decent selection of real ale, a friendly welcome and a great location in the historic heart- this is one of the best pubs in the City centre.

Good REAL pub behind the old town hall, Yates ale plus 1 or 2 others, can get a bit crowded but worth seeking out. Owner also has the Linton Hotel off Botchergate - an architctural masterpiece but too far to walk and find, worth a taxi ride. Also try the Howard Arms nearby.

This I have to say is one of the best pubs I've visited in Carlisle. Friendly staff, a very good pint of Yates bitter and the food is excellent. I had steak & ale pie which was about £5.25 and it was beautiful!
Well worth a visit.

Welcoming traditional pub in the centre of Carlisle, close to the Tourist Information Centre. This pub had a wider range of real ales on than either the Howard or the Cumberland on my visit ( 4 Sept ) and I enjoyed a good hoppy pint of Yates Bitter at only £ 1.90p.

This is one of the oldest pubs in Carlisle - look at the history plaque on the outside wall.

Incidentally, I was interested to see a leaflet/map behind the bar giving details of as many as 22 breweries now in Cumbria. Real Ale rules OK !

Good town centre pub that keeps a good pint of ale - I sampled Phoenix Arizona went down well. Staff were friendly and welcoming - only downside was the landlord kept absent-midedly whistling along to every tune that came on the jukebox, whether it was Motown classics or heavy rock, which was unbelievably irritating!
