Little to add really to my September 2005 posting, except to say that the Vines is an architectural masterpiece, both inside and out and second only in this respect to the Philharmonic amongst Liverpool's many classic unspoilt boozers. The present Vines dates back to 1907 and was constructed by the same architect as the Phil ( on which I have just posted ). My early morning visit on 3 April coincided with the first day of the Aintree race meeting and the pub was heaving with our Irish cousins wolfing down hearty cooked breakfasts. I made do with a pint of John Smiths Smooth - yes, the Vines is a real ale free zone - but if it's possible to savour a pint of John Smiths Smooth, this is the place to drink it. This is one of the few pubs in the country that I will visit, in the full knowledge that there is no real ale, and I recommend you do too. JohnBonser - 18 Apr 2008 13:53
Fantastic building but serving no real ale. Worth a visit to look around but I would bother expecting anything decent to drink. LickeyEndBooze - 29 Oct 2007 16:24
Watched the Irish stuff England last Saturday and was surrounded by Irish scousers! THe Cains was good though JohnMonaghan - 1 Mar 2007 23:22
The Vines is better known in Liverpool as `The Big House` and is one of a number of grand Victorian boozers in the city (see also the likes of the Phil, the crown, the lion tavern). I found the ale here quite decent, it is definately worth a stop off on a crawl. Scousefire - 18 Oct 2006 22:20
I am staggered that this pub does not appear to be on this website already - it is one of the most famous of Liverpool's classic Victorian pubs. It is a "must visit" pub for its classic unspoilt interior. Ask the Duty Manager to show you the special function room - which is often closed - with its superb wood pannelling and paintings. Also note the copper fireplace and bell - pushes in the back room. The pub is quite close to Liverpool Lime Street station - about 2 minutes walk from The Crown which is also worth visiting. Unfortunately, however, whereas the beer in The Crown is passable, the beer in The Vines is crap. JohnBonser - 26 Sep 2005 12:58
