| Another nice Somerset village pub. But the drinks selection was not as good as others. 2 real ales were listed on a blackboard - Bays Gold & Cheddar Potholer. But there were no pumpclips on the handpulls either side of the bar. So I'm not convinced they were still available. I was driving. So I didn't actually enquire. But there was no real cider either. The bar area had a few locals present. They were watching the football. We sat in a small room adjoining the lounge, where there was one other customer when we arrived. Friendly enough staff. We moved on to do some birdwatching on the Levels after this, or rather bird-scaring with my son in tow! Not the best pub of the day. blue_scrumpy - 3 May 2016 19:20 |
| Finally pitched up up here for only my second visit in 4 years, given its charming rural location and continuous Good Beer Guide support. My last visit was paid on a miserable wet day; this time round the weather was very clement and this helped show off the pub's potential. It was Sunday lunchtime and numerous punters were enjoying the victuals offered on the wide-ranging food menu. Most tastes would be catered for and it went well beyond the standard production-line roasts that many pubs seem to think is sufficient fare for a Sunday. There were only 2 ales on offer - we tried the Cotleigh Golden Seahawk which delivered a clean and fresh flavour. Note halves are charged at more than half the price of a pint, but as it's openly declared on the beer menu it's all above board. Also, CamRA members note that a 30p discount can be redeemed on pints - alas I didn't twig this until well after I'd ordered and paid full price. It seemed churlish to ask for the refund in retrospect, especially as the service had been affable enough. Clientele ranged from older couples to young families, although the accent was on well-heeled country folk. Decor-wise, one gets what one expects in the main bar area; horse-brasses and black beams abound. Nothing amiss with that. Well worth seeking out if in need of ale, food, or both. | Called in on the 17th of January. The main bar was empty, there were a few local kids in the bar with the televisions. That was fine with me as it left me with the huge, roaring, open log fire all to myself. | Called in on the afternoon of Saturday 10th March. The bar was empty but the "games room" part held the usual collection of all day boozers; the two Essex types holding court and ordering the barman to change the Sky channel as though they were in their own private fiefdom were particularly obnoxious (I'm very surprised the barman put up with it). The new owners really will have to make it clear exactly whose pub it is! Two ales were on: Gem and Seahawk, both in good condition. somertel - 12 Mar 2007 15:31 |
