| It may not be a pub as such. But its definitely a good place to go for a drink. The beer is a tad pricy but the atmosphere is friendly and they play decent music over the sound system here. The Guinness is certainly in good quality... Bit of an eating place and i would not here as its way too expensive i feel! I think that the arguments over whether or not this is a pub or not are irrelevant as this has to be the only half decent place to get a drink in the centre of Woking. Woking only seems to have chain pubs. I know that this is a problem that affects all large-ish towns, but at least if you go to Guildford or Kingston you will find a fair amount of decent, central pubs amongst the Wetherspoons/Litten Tree type rubbish. In Woking, you have to go a few miles outside of the town centre to get to a reasonable pub, which is not what you want to do if you are just going for a couple of quick pints after work. That is why I like Enzo's quite a lot. If it were elsewhere, I might not go there, but in Woking it provides a refreshing change from Yates which must be a good thing. The selection of lager may be poor, but at least you can drink without worrying about being set upon by a baseball capped oik who has been drinking all day. | Sorry but I must return the favour in the same tone as your posting - you're talking tosh mate. Six of us went here and agreed it was awful - my girfriend still maintains it is one of the worst meals she has ever had on a menu anywhere. The reason I said it was ambitious is because it tries to serve everything that is conceivably italian, yet prepares it all badly using poor ingredients. Clearly they should stick to basics if, as you say, they are a "brasserie and unpretentious with it". The comment about it being expensive is based on the fact I LIVE in London (although I appreciate you "entertain" (?) there), central London in fact, and eat in genuinely unpretentious Italians here all the time - and they are all much, much better and also much, much cheaper than the shite we were served at Enzo's. To clarify - the bill came to £220 for six of us - that would be fine if we'd have good food and anything but amateurish service, but we hadn't. I know cafes that serve better scran. Its a bad restaurant. And mate I have actually been here so I can tell you now Woking is grim. Its got one of those horrible 1960s/1970s shopping precincts and is just the kind of place that makes anyone with any sense despair of what we did to our country in the post-war period. anonymous - 6 Jul 2006 10:07 |
| I've got to reply to the comment of overpriced bad food at Enzos. I'm sorry - but I had to register just to dispell this complete load of rubbish. I eat at Enzos regularly. I also entertain in London weekly and so I have a fair yardstick to measure things against. The food is superb for what it is - simple and well cooked italian fare for the most part. Is it haute cuisine? No - it's a brasserie and very unpretentious with it. I must admit, if you think lasagne or steak 'ambitious' then perhaps I can see your point. Most people aren't dazzled by dishes like this, but perhaps birdseye is a stretch for you. Enzo and the team do a great job. Let me give you an example of my bill the other night: A really well cooked (simple) chicken Arrabiata with penne. My girlfriend had something similar. We had olives and bread to start. Two beers and a bottle of house wine (which you're right - is pretty good). I think the bill came to around £35. Unless you're used to eating in McDonalds, this is good value. Not only is the service well intentioned, it's incredibly welcoming. I have never had a complaint. Is it silver service? No! See 'brasserie' above. It doesn't double as a pub. It's more of a wine bar downstairs. But it is very popular and rightly so. Finally - woking is a commuter town. It's not Winchester or Windsor or even Guildford. It's very functional and the people who live here typically like it. It's also slap bang in the middle of the lovely Surrey countryside and 25 minutes by train to London.
