Great pub still, but all Shepherd Neame now as stated, for me, Shepherd Neame does not cut the mustard. Still has a sign at the bar stating guest ales, which we obviuosly never see, a shame. Beer is kept well though, however now quite pricey. Very pleasant staff, just miss the guest ales, a sad loss, I will miss it.

New Manager is now in situ and the Pub is now a purely Shepherd Neame house. This said there are six beers on including Porter and Bishops Finger, and all are in top condition. The food looks as good as ever, and the Pubs is still packed solid. However, the lack of a Guest Beer is regrettable, but still a fine Pub provided you like Shepherd Neame. At least it's not owned by GK!

FYI Scottish barman has gone.
Andy, his replacement is much more polite and actually seems to like people and take pleasure in serving a great pint!
The food is still great though quite pricey. Look for the spelling mistakes on the blackboard.
Charlie & Kim also on their way out: later this month?
Shame but good luck in wherever they go/whatever they do.

Still a fine Pub with courteous, friendly staff and a fine menu as well as some of the best kept beers you will find anywhere in Essex. Can't speak for those who've previously had problems or issues, but i've never had a problem here, and i'm not a regular or a Hurrah Henry!

Lovely old pub with parts of it dating back to the 16th century. Lots of overhead beams some lower than others, watch your head. The pub seems to be filled with all sorts of things some would say cluttered. Strangely it still seems to work in this pub.

I had a lovely pint of Crouch Vale 'Brewers Gold' just how it should taste. There were 6 beers available on a Wednesday so I guess the landlord does not have to reduce this during the week. The other beers were 3 Mauldon's (Mole Trap, White Adder & Suffolk Pride) Shepherd Neame 'Bishops Finger' and Brakspear 'bitter'. Probably not worth listing as a total free house I think they change constantly. Around the ceiling are all the pump clips from the beers he has previously had.

The pub seems to do a thriving trade with food at lunch time. The blackboard to your right as you enter states the food and prices. I must say looking on the board some of the choices looked better value than others. I must say the food certainly did smell good.

I think I will walk from Kelvedon station next time I visit as it’s very close and no problem with how much I drink.
