| A single room with a L shaped bar in the back corner. The boxed in section of ceiling through the middle of the bar implies once two rooms either side of the central entrance door. Now a pool table occupies one side with basic chair and table seating to the other. Traditional feel to the place, various pictures as decor and an exposed brick fireplace with a few brasses. Clean and tidy, tables cleared and wiped immediately, a good sign. Outside there is a garden/terrace with a series of gazebos for the smokers. Four handpumps serving at the time RCH Tender Loving Care, Tom Woods Harvest, Brakspear Bitter and Houston Tartan Terror. Maldenman - 9 Nov 2008 11:41 |
| It's just such a great, friendly pub with wonderful beer. what more could anyone want? I work abroad quite a bit and it's always the first pub I fancy visiting after drinking all that ghastly foreign lager. Great landlord and friendly staff too. girlygirly - 9 Sep 2008 15:52 |

| I know we should not take comments too seriously BUT as a female CAMRA member who does not obstruct the bar with her gut and is an incredible active MEMBER who volenteers her time to work beer festivals so all can come and enjoy would like to know what hidden agenda is being followed by Sebastian???? I have been into this pub with gay, straight, TG and mates that could be decsribed as 'all types,' The Rose is a good pub because it does not cater for one particular type, nor does it predudice. Some of their clientele have particular Linguistic needs and the staff have taken on new skills to include these into the 'local' crowd. The only clique you find there are people who want decent beer at a fair price in a friendly pub - that's us all is it not? As a girl there are few pubs that you can go into unnacompanied without grief. And unlike several pubs in town they ARE prepared to accomodate away fans on match days... yes Sebastian you can like football and real ale.... If anyone has outdated stereotypical narow minded views I would suggest they are to be found in some of these reviews rather than in the Rose! Now glad I got that off my chest I am planning my next trip away to a muddle field to volunteer at yet another festival.... Sorry for the rant but the CAMRA bashing Sizest twoddle reallymakes my blood boil, GET OVER IT Sebastian! BeerPixie - 6 May 2008 13:24 |
| Can’t comment on the homophobia allegations, other than I’ve seen no evidence of that personally. I’m pretty sure the vast majority of those who frequent this establishment are well meaning folk who wouldn’t tolerate that kind of thing. This is a relatively new real ale pub, and still appears to be rather pleased with itself… not without cause, but I have a few small reservations. Lovely fellas though they undoubtedly are, do those CAMRA stalwarts who stand at the bar not appreciate they’re creating a barrier? The ale pump section is small but these men, whose allegiance to the brewer’s cause is grossly event is their paunch profile; seem to have wedge themselves into it. One has to squeeze betwixt bellies to see what’s on the pumps… knowing they’re just longing to offer their opinion on the qualities of the respective guest ales. Beer Festivals, in big halls, with endless varieties of real ale, are the ideal environment for the CAMRA stereotype (the kind of festivals commemorated on XXXL sized polo shirts) – small pubs like the English Rose, especially wedged up at the bar, aren’t. Should more effort not be made to re-introduce these huge, but potentially majestic creatures, back to their natural environment? Still, once you’ve gone through the bar ordeal, this is a nice enough pub – albeit with a slightly annoying 80’s heavy jukebox, but then the Brickies is only five minutes walk away.
