Stopped off for a late un here a couple of weeks ago(on a friday)- WOW!! this place was really buzzing - 80% of the people in there were bouncing round to the jukey....the tunes weren't great-but I loved the atmosphere-more of the same please!

I love the Britannia! Friendly, unpretentious, good beer (but not full of real-ale anoraks), used by ordinary people who know how to have fun without having a fight. In short, it is what I would call a 'respectable working class pub' - somewhere I would happily take my old mum and dad for a drink on a Friday night (when they have live music), confident that they would enjoy themselves and feel 'at home'. Given it's location I was really pleasantly surprised to find this pub - with the odd exception most of the pubs in this area are either complete 'dives', trendy yuppie places, or full of city boys.

I'm not that surprised to this only has one review, as it's tucked away in backstreets between Old Street and City Road. It's actually quite a decent locals' pub, I thought: a large single-roomed interior with central serving area and reasonably busy on the weekday evening I visited, including with patrons of the nearby sports centre. Two ales on handpump: Adnams and Bombardier, and the Adnams was reasonably well-served. Service very good, and I was impressed when the landlord did the rounds at about 10.30pm with a tray of free sandwiches. Not sure if that's a regular thing, but it was a nice touch anyway. This probably suffers from being near some very good pubs indeed (the Wenlock, the Old Fountain), but it's not a bad old boozer and I'll return at some point.

The highlight of our treck from the "Head of Steam" to the "Wenlock". Not much of a MILD trail. No MILD at the "Britannia" but the little blonde barmaid was gorgeous. She didn't even know what MILD was but why should she they don't sell MILD in this pub. Anyway 3 points for the barmaid she gave me her immediate attention, excellent service, unfortunately didn't buy a drink so nothing for the beer or the Landlord. Get some MILD and we will be back.
