Pretty much full of people eating when i came in...food looked and smelt good, price was okay as well. Good choice of ales on tap, 7 i think in total. Had 2 very good pints, one of them was a local Farmer's Ale. Sat in the "locals" room and had a chat with a very pleasant old guy about beer, london and life ibn general. All in all a very good visit, nothing bad to say and definetly the best pub i visited in Maldon...the Blue Boar would of won but the electricity was out! lezford - 24 Jan 2012 13:27
Been in and out of here over the years - last night had 7 ales on incl. two local Farmers Ales and guest from Dark Star called Hopback - this was delicious. Always friendly enough in here but as noted previous it can get rammed in summer. I have never ventured in front bar and have been told the locals can get anal if 'strangers' go in there without an invite - knobbers! kernott1 - 29 Dec 2010 15:21
Went into this pub last Saturday into the locals front bar. Barman too busy having his own drink and talking to a local to serve me. Another unemployed bar maid made eye contact twice but didn't come over and serve and yet another barmaid had her back to the bar doing nothing. Barman then served another local who came in after me. Not great customer service so I walked out. wildnight - 12 Jun 2010 22:56
This is a very nice pub, clean and efficient and good beer. However, avoid like the plague on sunny week-ends... gets rammed to the rafters with sweaty fractious grockles. However, shouldn't tell you this really, there is a little local's bar to the right of the front entrance where you'll have a better chance of getting served and where you'll meet some "real" Maldonians (if that's the word). They'll hate me for telling you that. foghorn - 7 Jun 2010 11:14
Beer is well kept, but sometimes difficult to get served when very busy. The smell of vinegar on the chips on meals served in the bar can put you off your pint though. DLK - 12 Aug 2009 18:42
