Ale afficionadoes tend to avoid this place- if you tend to judge a cellarman by the state of the loos (advice given to me by a former Ridley's worker), you'd probably not bother with this pub.

Went there on my mini visit to Maldon last friday. At 9pm there were only a few people there but it was -4C outside! My fourth visit in all and fair choice of real ales. Very basic pub but I like it. Excellent choice of food although 70p for a standard bag of crisps is a bit steep.

Second port of call and worst pub on our crawl. Both real ales had vinegary aroma. Rather shabby and in need of redecoration - few other customers but friendly barmaid at least.

We had our 7th pint here on our mini pub crawl of Maldon so my memory is a bit hazy. I do remember that it had a good selection of 'real ales' and the bar staff were friendly.

Very small - only genuine sailor's pub left in Maldon, still living on it's fame for appearing in an episode of Lovejoy back in the mid-90s. Bar staff tend to be a bit moody, and the toilets are very basic, given all of the above this is actually a very nice pub.
