The landlord was strangely surly when we visited (but perhaps someone had annoyed him, or maybe that's part of his charm) and served the regulars before us strangers. Couldn't fault the range of 5 real ales and the 3 that we tried were excellent. The beer garden is nice but it is shared with two boxer dogs so beware where you walk. Trequites - 23 Apr 2011 17:37
Almost the perfect pub! The only thing missing is a roaring fire. Great choice of ales, friendly and lively atmosphere and you can even get b&b..... Who could want more? darkestdevon - 30 Oct 2009 19:23
Great choice of local ales, quality food (fish and chips was good), roaring fire sort of pub, well worth a visit. parmantom - 24 Oct 2009 15:59
It was a nice day so we took a walk over to Ide via the Lamb at Longdown. There's no change at the Poachers since our last visit. Still 5 beers on with a nice variety of strengths ranging from Branoc at 3.8% up to Cotleigh Buzzard at 4.8%. A nice pub, always worth the walk out from Exeter. Trequites - 12 Apr 2009 19:26
I have been to the Poachers at Ide on numerous occasions, coming from Plymouth i have always enjoyed the trip up and then winding your way through the lanes of Ide to find the Poachers Inn. The pub is on the High St and sits opposite the road that leads to the Parish church, on a personal note, i think this pub is one of the best around this area and there are quite a few decent pubs to choose from, but certainly the best pub this close to Exeter City centre. The pub has a great garden at the back which looks over fields and inside the pub looks and feels great. Upto 5 Real Ales and all of them are from West Country breweries, nice to see a pub that deals in South West beers, i believe Devon is blest with something like 29 Micro Breweries, so there is plenty of choice. The Poachers always has Branscombe Vale Branoc on, which is a superb light gravity ale, the other ales usually come from O'Hanlons of Whimple and Otter of Luppit. The food comes highly recommended and the portions are fair! Definitely worth a look, an all round decent boozer in a lovely location. Trouty - 30 Mar 2009 10:47
