From the outside this looks like a pleasant sort of place, however once inside i was instantly disapointed.
The place was empty which didn't help and it felt like a school hall inside.
The two guys behind the bar were clueless one of them looked like a manager.
It had a poor selection of drinks so i necked my pint of Jail ale and got the hell out of there to find a pub with some atmosphere.

Was very concerned when I approached this pub, the reputation has one of the worst in Paignton. The outside decor looks lovely tho, even the inside is lovely BUT the staff where very unfriendly the manager spoke to his staff like dirt and the beer was uncooth, I wonder when the lines where cleaned last you could see the yeast in the bottom of the glass and when I asked about it I got told to keep quiet and what do I know, even tho I run a pub myself and keep my lines clean, he said his lines are cleaned evey three weeks and thats exceptable.. yukkkkk. the 1st look of the carvery was quiet nice, but the taste was a different.. omg the meat was raw and the veggies well cooked. I complained but he said if I didnt like it eat elsewhere. I asked to see the kitchen and he refused. A kitchen has to be spotless and the chefs where smoking outside when i left with their whites on so god knows what was put in the food!!! I am reporting it to EHO.
sorry but I thought it would have been better, if you don't want dysentry don't eat there.

Never a very inspiring venue from it's early Courage days in the 70's, when it catered almost exclusively for coach parties. Nothing has altered my views on the place much, except that with internal modifications it is now even less characterful than before - unless you happen to like wide open spaces. Unfortunately it would seem that not many do and at 10 pm last Saturday night there were no more than half a dozen souls in the place.

With plenty of shiny chrome handpulls adorning the bar (apparently just for show), I was keen to try a drop of the "Great Beer" as described by our previous correspondent but sadly, none was to be had.

Advertising itself nowadays as a "Free House", this statement is only true insofar as it is quite "free" of any ale worth drinking.

Went to this in September for the first time in a couple of years. A complete change - and a good one in my opinion. In the old days it was tacky, dark and dirty with indifferent bar staff. The only thing good then was the occasional, talented tribute band.

It's now been reclaimed as a family pub and is very clean, bright and cheerful. Had an excellent carvery served by very friendly staff and then stayed-on for a few beers. Beer was a bit pricey, but the food was fantastic value for money. A vast improvement. Next time I'm in Paignton will certainly go again.
