Only posting as this pub is in the good pub guide & I am astounded at the rubbish comments. Food is top rate and is one of the best pubs in the area. It never advertises as it doesnt have to as its got such a good reputation. Friends travel here from Harlow to visit and Welwyn Garden/London etc and if you look closely you will see the odd celebrity come for repeat meals. Its spotlessly clean and we have never had a bad meal in here. Michael Winner who as we realise doesnt mince his words has eaten here on spec and gave it an excellent write up. Have tried other pubs and you will not go wrong eating at the Bull, we try other pubs but still end up wishing we had gone to the Bull instead. Yes it does cost a few pence more but overall you will get carefully prepared food. peggyleggy - 26 Aug 2011 20:12
Very poor service. Good quality food - but only if they cook it the way you requested, as there seems a tendency for the chef to cook as he sees fit and then for the staff to ignore you when the meal is delivered - and do not dare to complain whatever you do ! Ignored for 3-4 minutes upon arrival and left to jockey between the doorway and a sandwich board placed right in front of the bar area. Once the invisible cloak was removed we were rapidly seated at a large table, along with a huge platter of cheese - not ideal if you have a cheese allergy. Also - every 3rd item on the menu & specials seems to contain cheese. After a great crab starter, I was served a fillet steak that was requested medium, and arrived very rare. I tried to flag the waitress' attention but the staff were too busy chatting to each other behind the bar and completely ignored us throughout the main course. I ate 70% of my rare stake and decided I couldn't eat any more, especially since the small amount of sauce had diminished to nothing. When I complained about the lack of service both upon arrival and during the main course - the (new) waitress took a formidable stance at the end of the table and simply said "Well whatever I say you just wont be happy will you". This took my breath away and instead of it being just a comment on the service completely ruined the meal - after which we just wanted to pay and leave. She did return later, and offered a free coffee or dessert, but at this point all appetite was lost and a rapid departure from this incredibly rude establishment was sought. She then returned to her colleagues growling that the customer was beyond making happy - which absolutely wouldn't have been the case had our initial complaint been handled sensitively and courteously instead of the hostile, aggressive attitude we received. One to avoid - go the The Fox in Willian instead - much nicer, friendlier and still has atmosphere after 9pm ! scouseski - 14 Feb 2010 12:45
A very negative experience . I atteneded with my wife and child as soon as the pub opened in the early evening. The pub was unsurprisingly empty and we were told by staff " i suggest you go somewhere else, this isn`t a place for people like you" the staff indicated towards my son who was fast asleep in the pram. This is despite there web site saying children are welcome. We are a profetional smart couple but this pub is obviously only interested in serving there locals. The staff were extremely unwelcoming and i am pleased to say i will be letting my large social group know all about my experience. STEVEJ - 30 Jan 2010 11:25
Made prearranged visit for first time to this pub with group of walkers who were were very upset at their treatment by dictatorial staff. Should have realised this situation on recce visit from inadvertent comment by barmaid that if we used the car park we would take up space for people who would want to eat! Then there was the signage: "no ball games"; "Do not move garden benches"; "crying babies to be taken outside". It appears that they want only smartly dressed people who spend lots of money on food. It is a restaurant pretending to be a pub. HaltonBrat - 14 Jul 2009 06:44
