Damned fine brewpub - a must visit every time I visit Trondheim! And, dare I say it, *almost* affordable...

Fantastic brewpub with excellent staff who all seem to be proud of the wares they are selling. On my two visits ,I tried the Pale Ale,Bitter ,Porter,Stout and the the winter ale which was over 7% .The Amber wasn't quite ready and I only sampled the Pilsner. The Porter and Pale ale were my favourites.I had a very acceptable Fish stew, which I was informed was a traditional paupers meal but was expensive now as the cod was so dear!Being English the prices are eye watering at over a fiver a pint, but I did pay ten pound a pint for a strong beer in a pub called the Good Neighbour!

It's a brewpub in American rather then British style. The food is very good - mostly inspired by American and Mexican food. They also have a monthly specialty dish which is bacalao.

The people serving there usually have good knowledge of the beer they sell, and unless it's a busy night, they might even go into the brewery part of the premises and check the brew log for details if asked. They sometimes have guided tours, but I think that is only for groups that have booked in advance.

They've modified their recipes over the years, and their brewery-style also changed a bit when changing brew-master. Although the interior is decorated with beer bottles, unfortunately they sell none of these beers. They have seven regular (the Amber is regular) and one seasonal beer, but they are often out of one of them, sometimes two or even three. The Bitter and the Stout take ages to pour, but in the end you are rewarded with an excellent head. I think the info-sheets they use for the sampler tray is somewhat out of date, the beer-info in the menus seems to be more up to date, and they usually keep a sheet with the info about the seasonal beer in the bar - ask for it.

As the pub fills up during the evening, they dim the lights and turn up the volume for the music, and so the atmosphere changes quite a lot over the evening. The beer garden outside is ok, but it is sunny only in the evenings, there is some noise from the nearby E6 road, and sometimes there is a group of alcoholics hanging around just outside the garden - they are harmless, but not an improvement on the atmosphere.

(Full disclosure: I'm a regular customer.)

Situated in the middle of the city (Prinsensgt. 39) the microbrewery in Trondheim has since December 1998 established itself as one of the very best beer places in Norway. Its a medium size, cosy, one-room pub with a large counter in the middle. In fine weather it is possible to enjoy the ales outside in a beer garden (The Hop Garden).

During June 2005 there were 7-8 beers on offer. The regulars are all between 4,4 and 5,6 per cent ABV and include Pale Ale, IPA, Bitter, Stout, Trondhjemspils (lager) and Porter. An full-bodied Amber with a much taste and flavour, together with a sweet Weissbier were the two beers for the summer season the Weissbier being the brewers pride, I were told.

A sample tray with all the brewerys products is a well-worth introduction to the different flavours. The good range of food is related to beer and the staff, many of them being students, are friendly and knows how to handle and talk about real ale.
