Great brewery bar serving the whole York range of ales. friendly staff and good beer. No fruit machines or music, so you can sit and have a decent chat without having your ears blasted. New toilets a good improvement.

My husband had raved about York Brewery on a previous visit to the city.

Both loving the "real stuff" I decided to accompany him on this Christmas visit to York. Stairs were a slight struggle for me, but on reaching the top the beer made it worthwhile. The bar and atmosphere was good, but oh dear, your ladies toilet really let you down. Loose seat and no toilet paper, and that with a barmaid behind the bar too.

With good real ale readily available, please look after your lady customers too.

After getting legless on my first night in York I was determined to do the touristy ventures. I got myself a York sight seeing bus ticket, visited the City Art Gallery, The Jorvick Centre and then finally the infamous York Brewery. Talk about cramming it in all in one day!

I did the brewery tour which was both educational and fun with the host's wittiness etc.

The bar itself was very pleasant with wooden beams overhead along with comfortable lounge style seating. Closer to the bar offered a more traditional seating area with barrels as tables. The beers sampled was as you would expect top quality and fresh.

Nice geordie lass was more than hospitable and obliging - giving me directions to the nearest pub and Pizza Express.

Definitely worth a visit even if you don't do the tour the bar itself is a cracking venue.

Apart from the Ian Mckellen part, must say: just the same story as previous. Was 5 minutes late for the tour, but as it hadn't started yet, no problem. After the tour had a pint of Royal Charter IPA. Very good, but doesn't stand out to other IPA's. Carefull with the settee: it's a bit worn out so you sit lower to the floor then you think you would...

I cant understand previous reviews where difficulty has been encountered in finding the brewery. The tour currently costs 6.00 and there is a gift shop, and a comfortable private members bar, where you can have a couple of halves prior to the tour, and they are more than happy to serve you a pint or two after at around 2.65 a pint.

The tour guide was a fellow called Mick who was rather entertaining and reminded me of a character played by Sir Ian McKellen in a northern-based soap opera. He did have a tendency to drift off subject quite often and I was on the last tour of the day which might explain something.

Informative, entertaining and fresh tasty beer what more do you want? 8/10.
