Pub facilities/features:

General information: When it comes to finding a genuine local pub thats right at the heart of the community, you just cant beat the Rockliffe Arms in Whitley Bay. Homely, cosy, friendly, and exceptionally welcoming, its the kind of place where good beer, good company, and good conversation are an absolute given. Cask ale is its speciality, and weve recently had to install a 4th handpull to cope with the huge and ever-changing selection of guest beers. Theres a sunny, outside seating area, a busy quiz night, a selection of traditional bar snacks including pickled eggs and pork scratchings, plenty of domino boards, a football team, a darts team, and even a tug-of-war team. We could go on. But to put it simply, The Rockliffe Arms is everything a local pub should be and much, much more.

Still one of the best boozers in Whitley. Lots of sport on TV (especially boxing when its on). This is now run by the Whitley Bay Brewery. Normally four real ales on from the brewery and some guests.

The Rockcliffe Arms was my second pub of the day on Wednesday after the Beehive at Earsdon. It's a pleasant backstreet boozer near the station. It's part of the Fitzgeralds chain. The interior is quite dark. Sky Sports was showing on the TV. But the main form of entertainment appears to be conversation. Ales were Sonnet 43 Seraphim, Ossett Gold, Rat Rat Attack & Three Bridges The Rock (the house beer). Sadly no dark beers or real ciders.

When you leave Whitley Bay's grandiose Metro station by the main exit, turn right along Clarence Place and after a 100 yards or so you will find Algernon Place and the excellent Rockcliffe Arms. This is a comfortable side-street pub which caters for a good local trade and serves up good local ales. It has a single bar but with a couple of seating areas and a very pleasant atmosphere (lots of timber/carpet and traditonal furnishings). The beer was fine and like a lot of pubs in this area they promote local breweries (although the huge keg beer fonts tend to dominate the bar counter). No food but you can get a sarnie in the station buffet. I didn't go anywhere else in town - no reason to - as this was spot on.

Just about the only 'proper' pub left in Whitley Bay - a town where most of the other watering holes have been given over to the alco-pops and designer lager kiddywinkies. The Rockcliffe has an excellent selection of real ales, a friendly atmosphere, and does not serve meals - its a PUB. Dogs allowed, and no children after 7pm. Suits me.

Great little local pub close to Whitely bay town centre. Well worth the short walk, ask for directions.
