Fantastic atmosphere, warm and welcoming staff, great food, and all in a picturesque village!

This is by far the the best pub in the area. Its nearest rival in quality and ambience is approx 3 miles away (near a railway station), but the Alice beats that one by being open at lunch time, every day except Monday (I believe) and evening meal prices are more reasonable. I do not live far, but this has now become my favourite watering hole - not only for the quality and atmosphere of the surroundings, view from the bar window, good beer, friendly and helpful staff, but also for the excellent food. The food is not cheap, but is more reasonable than it`s nearest rival. So far, have eaten at the Alice twice, lunch time sandwiches are excellent simply bursting with a choice of fililngs, served in the bar overlooking the highland cattle and may pole. I have eaten in the restaurant in the evening once. I would like to be able to have the time to make lunch time sandwiches there a weekly event.
One tip - if visiting on a nice day and you have time, walk down to the end of the village towards the church, and walk down past the Hall and you will come to the confluence of the Nidd and the Ouse. It is a lovely peaceful spot - only 5 minutes walk and should not be missed. Then, back to the pub!

Well they say don't over-anticipate. We hoped for much from the refurbished Alice Hawthorn but alas it was a very disappointing experience; very drab menu, half of which seemed to be unavailable, wine not properly kept, restaurant diners overlooked by hassled waitresses as they dealt with a rowdy function in a separate room. Pub couldn't be in a nicer spot, so we may revisit the village, but certainly not the pub. A most dispriting evening.

Apologies for such a long rant here, but it's well deserved!
The Alice Hawthorn is without a doubt in the top 5 pubs I have EVER visited in my life! (And that's quite a lot of pubs)
In the idyllic village of Nun Monkton overlooking the village green complete with duck pond and maypole, and highland cattle if your lucky, it is the perfect setting for a perfect pub.
I visited on Saturday of Easter weekend to meet up with friends.
We were relieved to find it had a good sized car park with plenty of space for our huge estate we had for the weekend.
The two bars are nicely done, (great wallpaper!) the lounge is very comfortable with leather chairs by the fire.
It was quite quite when we visited at lunchtime.
Low beams, so remember to duck if your over 6 foot! Friendly and helpful staff.
Good beers on tap; Black Sheep and Landlord at the time.
Large dining room, (one of two) also nicely done & fantastic food, with a steak done how I asked for, rather then over cooked as is usually the case in a pub, and a reasonable price too.
Service was a little slow, not that it was a problem, but if it was busy, I can imagine it may take some time, but it was certainly worth waiting for.
The only possible criticism was the house white wine was rather sour, but that may have been a one off.
It may be 240 miles away from me, but I'm looking forward to my next visit already.
As you may have guessed.... A very well deserved 10 /10!
