user reviews of the Jubilee Inn, Flax Bourton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

On first impressions this pub seems to be called Two for One. Thats certainly what the pub sign swinging in the car park says. On closer inspection of the pub itself, we find that it is perhaps called the Dew Drop Inn. Im always a little suspicious of places that offer food deals such as this. Doing a two-for-one offer for a limited time to showcase a new menu or chef, or for one night a week when it would otherwise be quiet is one thing. But all day, every day is something else entirely. No business can sustain itself permanently by selling everything at half its value. Clearly if a dish is on the menu at 8, you know its really only going to be worth 4. In their defence I suppose I ought to point out that I think this may apply only to main courses, so perhaps they hope to make up for it on other courses and drinks. Certainly it always looks busy, theres always plenty of cars in the car park. But then McDonalds is always busy, so that doesnt really prove anything.

Anyhow, enough of my ramblings. Its an attractive pub thats draws attention to itself with rope lights around the rafters, and its got a suitably cosy country pub ambience to it. Its a good size with several different areas inside, some more geared up for eating but theres no problem finding somewhere to have a pint either. Theres a large beer garden out the back, although unfortunately the tall trees completely block the evening sun.

Service was a little slow with just one person serving at around 7:00 in the evening, when they could reasonably be expected to be getting busy. I dont visit this pub often, but from memory this seems to be a recurring theme here. What really annoyed me though was the attitude of the landlady. There were two people in front of me at the bar, one ordering food and paying by the card, the other buying a round of six drinks. So I was waiting for quite some time. She couldnt fail to notice me as there was no one else waiting and I was stood right by the pumps she was using. I got no acknowledgment, greeting or apology. When she eventually got round to serving me, there was still no apology. In fact she didnt even speak, she just sort of raised her eyebrows to indicate that she was ready to take my order. Unbelievable.

I avoided this pub for a long time as the only cider they had was Strongbow, so its good to see a marginal improvement in that they now do Blackthorn. Beers were Ringwood Best and Pedigree.

Now called the "Dew Drop Inn". How tacky is that!
