Having been a regurlar at this pub for many years, I enjoyed i often enjoyed a quiet pint and one of its burgers, which has a deserved reputation for being excellent. I even popped in occasionally for the fiendish quiznights in the winter. With a change of management, a period of rapid decline followed and I stopped going. With another change of hands, this good 'ole local is rebuilding its reputation. The burgers are back to being close to what they once were. The choices on the wine menu is good without going for expensive 'names'. While there are still some 'learning moments' - I am again starting to visiting reguarly and am have been enjoying the beer garden over summer with a pitcher of their wonderfully mixed Pimms (with plenty of fruit and mint) and close friends . Long may it continue. Eden_NZ - 21 Jul 2010 15:42
After moving to the area just a week ago I am very pleased to have discovered the Ship & Whale, I went in last night for the 1st time with my house mate and we had a great evening. We both had the Homemade Ship & Whale Burgers, and they were great. The staff were very friendly, laughing and joking with us and they were full of local knowledge. SE8 - 21 Jul 2010 15:31
We returned here, last night (Sunday2nd), after avoiding the place. We had heard that new owners were in place as well as new kitchen staff. The bar itself is much tidier than before. The new owner has tried to improve the decor and done a nice job. However, the food.....Where do you start... We had the Roast (I had the Beef, my firend had the Pork) The meat was very nice, but the vegetable were awful. The Roast Potatoes should never have been served, the Cauliflower was un cooked and the Cabbage was ver under done. And to top it all, the plates were stobe cold. And all this for £10-£12 per plate. Shocking. The new chef seemed to want to spend more time chatting to people than to be in theKitchen. Please, sort this out!!! doolally - 3 May 2010 22:37
Lovely, welcoming, comfy pub. Very competent barmaid got us our two pints and packs of crisps in short order, and we sat up at the long bench by the big windows and had a pleasant break on our Sunday evening walk. We only stayed for one, but plan to return to sample the food soon. I also don't understand the comment on sofas - there were a few in one cosy corner of the bar... NB: This pub sits smack on the Thames Path on the east shore of the Rotherhithe peninsula - ideal 'halfway' point between Greenwich and Tower Bridge. ferners - 28 Apr 2010 16:10
We were in London over the New Year period 2010 and had an awesome party at the Ship and Whale and I must say that the food, staff and service was excellent. John the owner made us feel so welcome and we enjoyed it so much we are planning another trip at the end of this year and will be taking the family along... John well done... looking forward to seeing you all in December. Regards Henry and Debbie Steyn South Africa ofcon - 25 Apr 2010 16:58
