i m glad i dont have a pub like this on my doorstep.. My wife would never see me and my doctor would show me pictures of damaged livers... Great atmosphere , food and a solid pint of Spitfire with a clean full head.. It must be so hard making a go of a neighbourhood pub these days , especially one tucked away off the main routes.. there are great walks to be had around the river and docks in this area and I recommend this as the top pick for stops. Sadly they are nt open mid week lunchtimes - except Fridays in the summer.. Great food and friendly staff

Shepherd Neame pub not far away from the banks of the Thames. Spitfire & Kent's Best were the only 2 ales on my Tuesday afternoon visit. Prices were quite steep. The interior is large and open planned with candles on each table. The staff were friendly enough, but there were very few customers. Found nothing particularly special about this place, but it was handy for a quick pit stop whilst walking along the river.

When we visit London the only pub we frequent as our local is The Ship and Whale. John the owner and Basia make you feel so welcome, the food is amazing and great value for money and we have never had bad service ever. We recommend this pub as the only pub in the area where you feel at home...The New Years Eve party is an event to be remembered...Before John took over I believe that the pub was run down, but in the last three years he has done wonders with the place. Looking forward to seeing them in Dec/Jan...We rate this pub top marks...

I was a regular in this pub for my first two years living in London, and even though I have moved from the area now, I still go back when I can. The customers are friendly, the food is great, the pub is clean and tidy and looks fantastic and the garden is lovely (especially on a Sunday morning when you fancy a tasty and very reasonably priced dockers breakfast!). But the best thing about the Ship and Whale are John and Basia and the rest of the staff, such friendly people who will go out of there way to make you feel comfortable. I miss it so much, get that Sirloin cooking and pint of Spitfire poured, it may just be time for another visit!!

Living near the Ship and Whale I probably don't go there as often as I should but that's being remedied now. I popped in last night for a quick drink with a friend and ended up deciding to eat. The tuna steak salad special was absolutely wonderful. Full compliments to the kitchen on a fantastic meal. Sitting outside in the warm atmosphere of the beer garden on a beautiful evening in October was a delight. Long may this surprise second summer in October continue and the Ship and Whale is the perfect place to enjoy it.
