user reviews of the Drumbeg Hotel, Drumbeg

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This hotel was a regular haunt of mine in the late 80s and the early 90s. At that time it catered for the angling fraternity and the bar was packed with a motley crew of locals and anglers. It was a busy place and had a fantastic atmosphere. It quickly became my favourite pub in all of Scotland. Sadly the owner sold the hotel in 1991 and there followed years of bad management. Happily, I can report that the pub is back in sympathetic hands, and the present owners are doing a good job with the place.
They do not sell real ale at present though the owner is considering it. I had to make do with McEwans 80' on keg.
I spent four nights at the hotel last week and the only customers every night were hotel guests and a man who said he was originally from Basildon but was now living in Drumbeg until 'I go into the ground'. During a chat with the owner, I got the impression that he may have banned or discouraged people from coming to the pub. That's a shame, as it was the locals that made this such a wonderful place to visit.

Stumbled upon the Drumbeg Hotel bar whilst on a driving holiday in North and West Scotland. What a night!! Food is basic but frsh and well cooked, but the company is superb.
Breathtaking views in the village.

Forget any comment pre-Jule 2005; completely different owners and staff. Now in the hands of sympathetic owners and local staff and a welcome return to days of old!! The bar is a highland joy; couthy, vibrant and authentic. I've been coming for 15 years, visted the hotel twice in 14 years and then 22 times in the last year (probably more by the time you read this). Honest pub grub, great craic, lovely atmosphere and a place to return to time and again. Try this: you wont be disapointed

The pub is once again open to the public after years of bad ownership and mismanagement! Gone are the fancy menus and over priced wine and back are the usual pub grub and draught beer! The new owners hope to shake off the bad press which has dogged this hotel/pub and they are doing a grand job so far!

This hotel, unlike almost any others in the whole of the north of Scotland, does not serve been to anyone who is not eating in their restaurant!!!!!

Nearest alternative is circa 14 miles away!
Lots of gossip about how this came to pass, as well as a reference to the qualit of the service and food may be found on the Observer newspaper website.
