For anyone who may be interested, it would appear that the pub has been bought by the proprietor of the New World noodle bar just over the road. They are now seeking planning permission to build a dedicated smoking area out the back. Fingers crossed it will retain some semblance of a pub. The noodle bar does very good quality, good value chinese food. Combine this with a few interesting ales and it could well be a lifesaver for this place. young_camra_collectiv - 15 Sep 2007 18:52
Looks like this pub is shut for good now as the freehold is up for sale david737 - 18 May 2007 15:57
When I passed this pub the other day there was a note in the window saying 'closed until further notice' and I can't say I'm suprised this was never a 'friendly' sort of pub anyway. david737 - 18 Jan 2007 17:53
Am surprised to see this place open again, but it still seems as empty as before. looks to be an old pub and a bit different from the rest in the high street, as previous poster said, looks like it could be so much better, if only someone tried. Norealaleinorpington - 18 Dec 2006 16:33
The Hopeless wAnchor has reopened but very little seems to have changed for the better. Still no ale, still has letters missing from its sign, still full of sad gambling addicts from the state-of-the-art Coral next door. The only obvious change is the 'friendly' signs up on the doors and windows that declare: OVER 25s ONLY NO DOGS NO CHILDREN REGULAR PATRONS ONLY Yeah, that ought to sort this hole out... What a desperate waste of a potential pub. young_camra_collectiv - 11 Dec 2006 16:15
