The Volunteer, Lewes - pub details

Description

A warm, friendly pub in the heart of the thriving market town of Lewes, East Sussex. Exceptional pub grub served daily, sourced from East Sussex and quality live music played on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. The pub was given a much needed refurbishment in 2007 and now features wood floors and panelling, two fire places, leather furniture and a separate dining area from the main bar. The bar itself has four hand pumps featuring Harveys Best, two guest ales and Westons Old Rosie. The cellar is well kept and the quality of the real ales and Old Rosie are exceptional. The usual keg selection applies plus spirits and a decent wine selection.

A lovely pub to sit and drink or dine out in. Sunday lunch can be washed down with a few last drinks and the sound of live blues, jazz or folk from 4pm. If your looking for somewhere lively on a Friday night the place is packed, with up-tempo blues, rock or country.

Much need lively pub in Lewes. Good service, do not have to wait long to be served. Great live music. One grumble landord and lady need to chat to their customers would make all the differance, just seem to stick to their regulars which makes it seem a little clicky.

I used to work in this pub. It was always busy and always had a brilliant atmosphere. When the noughties took hold, the pub went through a number of terrible managers who unfortunately destroyed that atmosphere. It turned into a dive, I agree. The place was dirty, the beer was flat and the staff were rude. Since November 2008 when the current Landlord and Lady have taken over the place has been totally transformed. It has changed from what it was, but it has almost grown up with the rest of us. No longer are there cheesy discos and live footy matches, but they would seem out of place now. Instead there is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, brilliant food and excellent live bands. I would invite everyone who has rated this pub so poorly in the past to revisit and revise their rating!

As previous reviewers have mentioned, this place deserves far more than its current rating as it is a very pleasant pub.

I thought that the barmaid was polite and my Guinness was well served. Harveys Best, Tribute and Doom Bar were also available alongside Old Rosie and a standard draught selection.

The background music was decent and at a nice volume and I collared a couple of friendly locals who were very forthcoming in their explanation of the toad-in-the-hole game which I had not come across before.

I’d certainly pop back in here for a pint again if passing.

Not a bad boozer. Visited on a Saturday afternoon and both fires were going. Nice and clean with a good pint of Tribute on the go. Don't know what it's like in the evening but I do agree that an overall 4 rating is a bit harsh.
