Oh dear. A perfectly pleasant evening was spoilt by the scant disregard for beer and customers shown by the staff in this pub. After ordering a pint of LSD, I noticed that the beer had a strong vinegary taste. A quick check with the other lads in the group (all beer veterans and one the manager of The Greys), confirmed that the beer was indeed suspect. This was a fact the bar lady would not accept when I explained it to her. After calling her manager, I was then told in no uncertain terms the beer could not be off, as nobody else had complained. A sample of the tap confirmed how the beer should have tasted, but still the ‘Manager’ rejected my cause. Only after a good five minutes of argument, during which I noted I would rather not be standing arguing the toss with him but enjoying my beer, did he finally crack with a something of a patronising air. In short, nice looking pub, but with staff clueless in both their knowledge of beer and customer service. Be warned. markincyberspace - 30 Jan 2011 12:02
Decent enough place, let down by a few flaws. Choice of 3 ales at 3.30pm on my visit yesterday, however by 7pm these were reduced to one as those which had run out weren't replaced. Disappointing. Service very slow - could do with an extra barman. Barstaff that were there often outside having a smoke while people queueing etc. Shouldn't take 10 mins to get a pint every time I went to the bar, and this was Sunday afternoon not Friday night. steve_on_tour - 25 Oct 2010 12:47
Long been one of the better pubs of Brighton, before all the trendy Londoners started moving down this was the kind of place that helped Brighton build a reputation for being the place to be. Not sure if that means I should like it or not though! happychap - 25 Jan 2008 14:47
Never eaten here but seems friendly enough. Cant stand sofas in pubs, there for falling asleep on in front of the telly when you get back from the pub not for drinking on.This is the sort of place I would go to for a pint not an evening. forresearchpurposesonly - 18 Aug 2006 23:45
I've never been particularly enamoured of this place, which is mre of a bar than a pub, but it's light and airy layout, decent(ish) beers and apparently good food kept it there or thereabouts as a potential watering hole. However, that tell tale sign of a dodgy spot (security on the door) really chimed in the other week. We were in a part if six, sqeezed in on a sofa, and an officious little bloke with a badge was relentlessly rude and agressive in tell one of our party not to put her feet on the seats. What should have been a friendly evening spiralled horribly because of what looked to be a first time bouncer getting a bit badge happy. The trouble ended up following us outside, which wasn't great, and has put me off going near here anytime soon. antmiller - 19 Dec 2005 13:16
