First visit for some time last saturday to watch the England v Wales rugby- busy but friendly atmosphere, roaring fire on the go, and one of the best pints of Harveys I've tasted in a while.

Won't leave it as long before the next visit

It might be a bit like the Dover Castle, but sells Harveys instead of that stuff from Kent, so deserves and extra point or two.

An OK pub, used to be much better but frankly gone a bit girly of late. Lots of students from the accommodation over the road come here for a couple before town.

Quick history lesson: the reason why it is called The Geese Have Gone Over The Water is because of the pub's Irish roots: the Wild Geese were the Irish army who fought William of Orange in the 17th Century. They were given the option of exile to France or executiion, and they fled 'over the water'.

Needless to say, does very good Guinness.

Urban legend has it that it was called 'The Geese', however the sign writer had to admit he couldn't paint geese once he'd done the background, so suggested that thay might have flown over the water?

Anyway, it's a lot like the Dover Castle (if a bit more 'hugger mugger')just up the hill in many many ways, so if you can do without the beer garden of the Castle, and want to save your knees, pop in.
