Much better than it was but there is a homosexual Irish man who believes that he in some way connected to the Pope who is constantly at the bar! He WILL preace "the word of the Lord" to you (if you are male) before trying to grope you. Furthermore, he pays homeless, heroin addicts for sexual favours (and is really quite open about it).
Nice pub though.

Has now been re-decorated and renovated and has re-emerged as THE GATEWAY, apparently taking its name from the new and adjacent bowstring bridge over the railway line. (This is supposed to represent a "Gateway To Bolton" but the view through it is of two sex shops and a tattoo parlour). As for the pub, it still looks to be attracting for the same workshy punters as before.

Used to be a good cosy traditional pub with cask ales and food but has now gone downhill and squalid, and seems popular with the unemployable. Unbelievably ham-fisted DIY repaint of the rotting frontage adds to the down at heel image. Could do with a complete makeover as is basically a good pub in need of some tlc.
