Unfortunantly has now been turned into a bar, decor now bland and old wooden chairs now faux leather tub chairs. Juke box just plays gay club anthems on a loop. Oliver_taplin - 6 Jun 2008 14:11
I like this pub a lot...one of the few pubs around that hasn't been turned into a bar. Very friendly, good food, great staff and they let you take your dog in. What more do you need? richards_bird - 15 Sep 2007 13:42

Just off the seafront and next to the boundary of Brighton and Hove, the 2003 and 2004 GBG listed Bedford Tavern advertises itself outside as “a country pub in the heart of town”, and certainly looks the part with its traditional wooden exterior and leaded glass windows. Inside, there is a suitably cosy L-shaped bar leading into a partly-partitioned back saloon; although the traditional country effect is somewhat jarred by (i) the hanging on the walls of fantasy-type paintings inspired by The Hobbit where other pubs have rustic scenes inspired by Constable; (ii) the dish of milk chocolates on the bar where other pubs tend to place peanuts. The Bedford Tavern is a popular meeting place for members of Brighton’s lesbian and gay community, the two bar staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, and along with Harveys Best Bitter, there are (during my Spring 2004 visit) two guest beers, Sharps Eden Ale and Highgate St George. I try both and prefer the Sharps, but I have to say that on this warm, humid day, I would have preferred had both beers been kept rather cooler. A more recent visit, late last year, found that the pub has lost its guest beers and is now serving only the Harveys Best and Youngs Special (a third handpump was, though, turned around). It has also lost its GBG listing, being omitted from the 2005 edition. Visit the web site <http://www.bedfordtavern.com> thequaffer - 22 Mar 2005 14:54
