| How unfriendly is this place!! Thought we would look for a new local but it won't be this one. The landlady was too busy chatting to a regular and changing TV channels to be bothered to say hello. Got a couple of grunts when we ordered our drinks but no civility until the glasses were empty but we weren't prepared to spend any more time or money in this pit. anonymous - 13 Nov 2007 11:21 |
| The locals pub. This became the 'works' local when the Feathers over the road, changed hands and became run down (it's changed hands again & is much better). My favorite memory of this bar was the on going quiz on our first visit. A bra was pinned to the bar - with sign saying "Guess how many ponuds in Jilly Jugs" I'm not sure if anyone ever one. Split into 2 bars in the old Saloon / Public bar fashion. TuftUno - 7 Sep 2005 13:02 |
| Small old-fashioned pub, seems to have been recently refubished. Mostly local 30/40-something builder types when I was in there, friendly enough atmosphere. Greene King beers on handpump, which aren't a favourite of mine unfortunately. Better choice of beers across the road in the Feathers, but the Railway is probably the better pub. | Quite possibly one of the seediest, but friendliest pubs in England. On the A22 (fairly busy road) in the picturesque village of Merstham, the Railway is for locals and visitors alike. Pretty courtyard garden, restaurant attached, good value bar meals, quiz nights, dart board and slot machines, it is small, with alcoves and fairly clean loos. Dave, the bar manager/owner/tender, has been there forever. The pub is surrounded by antique stores and a petrol station - but backs onto some fine Surrey countryside walks, and is very close to the local pretty village cricket ground. Rivaled by the Feathers (opposite) those who wish to experience "Real" Merstham village will always pick the Railway. Used to have a really good Seafood van in the driveway at weekends, but believe that has now gone. Shame - divine lobster tails for the barbie! Many will remember Rob from Aus in the bar - regularly spent his salary in the slot machine. bertram - 28 Feb 2005 03:28 |
