what a terrible place for a cold, fizzy beer! i have heard no good reports about this place, the person who has put this as a good pub must be either talking about the wrong place or has standards lower than any normal average human being. The pub does stink!! the smell of stale beer and the toilets URGH!! Its a shame that this pub is the way it is, with all the other pubs in the surround areas being refurbished and having a nice feel when you walk makes you hope and wonder when a brewery will step in and see the potential for the clientelle it could pull in.

If you like great beer, a brilliantly friendly atmosphere and a landlord and landlady who are a pleasure to speak to, then look no further than the chequers.

I've only been going there for a year or two every now and then but I can't understand the other reviews that have been placed on here. There is no smell of stale beer, the people behind the bar are always very hygienic!! friendly and happy to help. Moreover, the toilets are always in a good condition and kept very clean (I hear the ladies are even better).

Sure, the place has a dated feel - but that's why it's such a great pub. It's homely and full of great people from millionaires (no kidding) to students through to your typical regular. If you want fancy decor then bugger off elsewhere, it's about the experience here, not whether the light fixtures are new.

Awful awful awful! We were driving through and thought this may look like a nice place for the children to enjoy an afternoon, how wrong were we! it looks like steptoes when you walk in, then stench from the toilet is unbearable. The owners look as though they need a good wash, we didn't even bother to think about eating in there after we saw the dog barking its head off at us when we walked past what must of been the kitchen from the back. We will not be returning, such a shame as the garden is ideal for families.
I just wish we would of read the reviews here before we stopped!

This pub is the worst in Potters Bar, the toilets are putrid and are ever clean, its disgusting. There is no dishwasher for the glasses, they are washed in a dirty sink by hand. There is dog hair everywhere, as a big alsation which is not very friendly strolls around behind the bar and in the kitchen, not very health & safety! I would not recommend this pub to anyone, the landlady didn't seem too bad, but the landlord is extremely rude. The food is not too bad, but from the cleaniness of the place you wouldn't want to think what state the kitchen is in. The only redeeming feature would be the garden for children, although the toys there are very shabby and alot are broken. I would suggest another 2 minutes up the road to Old Owens, or The Two Brewers, much more hygenic, friendlier and hospitable.

well - if you have kids under 7 and its a nice day - this is a great pub. We have been a couple of times - and yes I know this site is supposed to be for hardened ale drinkers - but finding a pub that so caters for kids is a godsend to us so endowed. The drinks seemed adequate, yes it is on a road - but its safe its got a large beer garden - cant comment on the food though as didnt have any.

I rate this in regards to the catering for children.
