Genuinely traditional building that seems to cater mostly for tourists- the interior is composed of several rooms that ramble around a central bar, and the walls are stone with plenty pubby touches. Two fires in the two large rooms-both gas-powered, unfortunately. Beer range not the best in York- Deuchars, Black Sheep and Tetley Bitter. Deuchars was OK but there are better pints nearby. I quite like the place bu wouldn't prioritise it if visiting York. I wouldn't be averse to another visit though. Carlurmston - 10 Mar 2010 18:36
Love this pub, and have a lot of memories here from my old student days (93-96). Went in last week, and it hasn't changed at all. Same lovely character. I have to echo Quinno's comment though regarding the level of service. My wife and I too experienced the sarcastic barman with his "barfly friend" and weren't impressed at all. Also, the price was such that I had to actually double-check he'd totted the drinks up correctly. Too pricey by far. Worth paying a quick visit, but until the prices get reasonable, I wouldn't spend an evening in here. Bombjack - 11 Mar 2009 15:42
Found this place a rather disappointing experience. There were a couple of ales on (my Deuchars was OK), but were quite expensive compared to nearby outlets. The inside was very Olde Worlde style, though a bit cramped but par for the course in York. So for, so OK. However the real beef was the service level; which left a lot to be desired. After asking for a black coffee for Mrs Quinno and being served a white one (important for her as she can't have milk) I asked for it to be changed - quite politely - to which the barman (who had cocked up the order in the first place) audibly sighed and rolled his eyes at his barfly friend who sniggered loudly. Won't be back in a hurry on that showing. Given the prices and service levels this place feels less like an honest boozer and more like a tourist trap. Poor. Quinno - 20 Feb 2009 18:52

This must be the most improved pub in York. Visited 23 Oct 07 after about 3 years. Very friendly welcome and attentive service, excellent quality and value food. Add beautifully kept cask ales and the score is 9/10 FrankMG - 26 Oct 2007 21:37
