user reviews of the Hog In Armour, Norwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It works and attracts a well behaved crown but despite obviously shit loads of money being spent on it, it's pretty ordinary. Nice and clean with decent beer but shouldn't every pub be. Ok for a visit on the circuit but nothing special.

Most definitely not as descibed below.

Recently taken over by somebody from Delayneys, the Hog has very much joined the Norwich 'cicuit', and I would imagine the previous reviewer would find all the things he hates here now.

In it's favour is the fact that the new licensing hours allows you to arrive late and not have to join the other revellers on their way down to Riverside - a bonus indeed !

Besides Adolf Hitler and Justin Timberlake there arent many things worse than a pub that structures its whole character around the singular drive to attract students and the 3k of yearly Government cash they carry in their pockets. Commercial sense it may make to a certain extent, but for everyone else in the real Universe (and a fair portion of students themselves) the results are horrific: cheap tacky promotions, poncy décor and a drink selection smaller than Jordie Marsh`s functioning brain cell.

I therefore always admire a pub that resists this temptation, and that bluntly is why I like the Hog so much. It would be so easy – with Norwich art school and a Uni dorm on its doorstep – to throw itself full steam into hell and deck the place out with swanky fittings and wanky alcho-pops, but fortunately it opts to preserve a classically natural pub interior and a wide drink selection. There is also a pretty top notch darts board (yes, a real darts board, not just a circle of beaten coloured cardboard hanging from a wonky nail) and best of all upstairs is an expansive “common room” type area with a few well maintained pool tables.

There are a few irritable things that chip away at the Hog`s appeal a little bit: its jukebox only has settings between deafening and ear splitting and on a weekend night its relatively small central area can become rather cramped and smokey. These aside though the Hog deserves a very good 8/10.
