| As drinkers we live in an unfortunate age where heinous chain pubs under the auspices of bastards like Weatherspoons and Slug & Lettuce are slowly chomping their bland way through the land, swallowing up decent local boozers with the same vigour that a footballer approaches a Page 3 girl. True, this has resulted in an upswing in the chest and facial quality of your average barmaid, but the trade off in terms of crap wanky interiors and tasteless lager domination at the taps is hardly worth it. The Hogshead chain cant be excused totally from this nightmarish process, but to be fair I`ve always felt a shade of character is allowed to escape into its pubs, something that is certainly the case with the Norwich branch. Inside it has an almost, almost, natural feel to it, especially the small side room to the left of the entrance which is kited out with defunct fireplace and darkly wooden décor. True its forced, but like the rest of the light wooden interior its doesn’t feel quite as superficial as most chain pubs. The drink selection too is relatively wide (though nothing stunning), the staff friendly and overall during the week the atmosphere is pleasant enough. Unfortunately though like all pubs of this type (and in its location on the edge of the Tombeland party area) it attracts on a Friday night/weekend a large amount of 20 something arseholes looking to blow their minimum wage and score with the local teenage welfare mothers in Topshops 2001 tart collection. Equally while there are some pleasant touches about the place, there isnt anything outstanding that would want to make you add this to a pub crawl. However, passable it certainly is and hence gets a 6/10. pgazz - 23 Apr 2005 14:50 |
