wonderful location near norwich market, loads of space, attractive exterior. so why waste it????
very basic and a congregating place for the burberry indeed.

If you don’t actually wear Burberry contact lenses and have and have your job seekers number tattooed onto your forehead, to prove the unemployable piece of crap you are, then you won’t be very welcome here. Day time I’m told the food is not too bad, cheap if not basic but at night when the creatures all crawl out from underneath their stones, they all seem to crawl here. If you like the move Day of the Dead, you might like it here.

not been in during the day but I hear the food is decent value. At night, however, bit hard to be too critical of the clientele because there usually isn't any. Those who do remain are definately in the superchav league. Never seen a problem, fight or so in ther but probably 'cos they're actually too hammered on stella to fight anyone. Not a strongly managed pub.

have never noticed the 'unchavy atmosphere' mentioned below. always seems to be arguments outside amongst the locals!

For the first few years of my stint at Norwich Uni (1999-2003), the Refreshers had a lot in common with the nearby Prince of Wales: both needed to be taken to a quiet alley and shot.

In the Refreshers case though it would have been of a sympathy killing. As unlike the teeth breakingly unpleasant POW, the Refreshers was just plain depressing. Bare and decrepit on the inside, ugly and unappealing on the outside – the only thing that detracted from its aesthetic deformities was the sparse collection of serial loners who sat in silence sipping the warm liquid that apparently was supposed to be booze. Seriously, I`m feeling the fecking life drain away from me just thinking about it …

However, exactly in the same fashion as the POW, someone clearly got a grip halfway through my Norwich years. The big interior was refurbished and upgraded, the deppresso`s relocated to the nearest clinic and over night a new and mainly young clientele recruited from thin air.

The Refreshers is therefore infinitely better than it used to be – but we shouldn’t get too carried away. For as with the POW the refurb was clearly conducted with a Weatherspoons gremlin sitting on the managers shoulder. The interior now is very much from gastro-pub hell, even if remnants of the buildings original large and earthy interior seep through a tad over the millions of plastic menus and bland added on fittings. The taps too are boringly lager heavy…

Still the food is decent, the service friendly/quick/ the atmosphere surprisingly unchavy and the prices pretty good. Despite my criticisms therefore this is one of the fairly decent gastropubs, though worth nothing more than a 6/10.
