user reviews of the Malt Shovel, Barston

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Has had a reputation for its good food for many years and is arguably a restaurant rather than a pub. Walking through the main building into the garden and then back into the separate barn meant we felt detached from any pub-like atmosphere. That said, the food and service were excellent although this is not a place for the ale-lover; the Doom Bar was in reasonable condition albeit uninspiring and the Atlantic Pale Ale was equally as immemorable.

I've also been here a few times and I don't think it's really a pub, probably now beyond a gastro-pub and more like a restaurant; nevertheless, I've always found it to be an excellent place to eat. The rather high prices - certainly for this area, at least - mean that I don't come here too often, but save it for special occasions. It's always been fairly busy when I've visited. 7/10

I have eaten now at the Malt shovel quite a few times and would thouroughly recomend it to anyone who appreciates very good food, a real gastro feel of quality mixed with a warm friendly ambience from both staff and happy customers alike. I have eaten at all the main gastro pubs in the midlands and really feel this one to have the best mix for either private meals or taking important clients out as i have done both running my own local business. Happy eating 10/10

I have eaten at the restaurant at this pub on a few occasions, and in the past have had some pleasant meals. However on the last two occasions my requested main meal was not available. However the waitresses did not seem to know that fact and my orders were taken. How come that early service is totally unaware that certain items are not available? There was no apology and no attempt at any compromise. If you like a nice quiet setting then this place is fine, however if you like the food that you order to be on the menu then you might look elsewhere. My party of 6 walked out of this establishment owing to their total lack of care, and at the prices they were charging (22+ for a fillet steak ) I personally can't recommend it and certainly won't be back!
