After previously winning "Community Pub of the Year", the Highwood is one of six finalists in this year's competition. Good Luck Dave.

Of the half dozen or so pubs in the area this is the best although this doesn't say an awful lot about the standard of boozers in and around Olton. For my recent visit to watch the last Blues match there was a choice of several screens in the lounge, and a larger one in tne bar. There were one or two real ales and the vibe was generally friendly and sociable, belying it's unpromising outside appearance. A brooding alsatian often patrol the roof. But it's unpretentious and seems to offer a great deal in terms of events for local elderly residents and charities. I retain affection for this alehouse as my late father used it, and we held a wake for him in the lounge.

Great pub.(I don't know what Barry Evas is on about!)
Toilets clean, good prices, friendly gaffer. The pub raises thousands for charity and always has a variety of entertainment on offer.Turfed out for Cheltenham week, currently decorated for upcoming World Cup - including montage of pictures of regulars on one wall behind a set of goals!
Proper local.

I cannot believe the criticism that has been levelled at the Highwood on this site! These people must be getting totally mixed up with another Highwood pub. The manager has done a great job with the running of the pub (voted community pub of the year), if it was bad, do you seriously think the pub would get this type award????? I always start off here on a night out before moving on to Solihull. Its a friendly place, the prices are excellent, what more can I say? If you don't like it, don't go, we don't need the likes of Mr Evas here anyway. The Olton Tavern is welcome to your moaning!

There must be two Highwood Pubs as the one I use bears no resemblance to the one Mr “Evas” talks about.

My tastes do not aspire to the heights of the local Wacky Warehouse (Olton Tavern), but I do enjoy an honest, straightforward, down to earth local, where I can meet and talk with friends, in a pleasant, secure, environment.

The Highwood I visit is a friendly local pub; the manager works his tail off to:
• Welcome all (especially the ‘Locals’)
• Ensure that there is no trouble
• Keep the toilets as clean as possible (He checks and cleans them himself, and I have often seen him do so)
• Arrange a full programme of events to suit all tastes

For instance, which other manager would “Turf the Pub” so that his clientele could enjoy the “feel” of the Cheltenham Gold Cup without actually having to go there! No extra cost, just a nice day. Now I don’t particularly enjoy horse racing but a lot of people do.

Obviously if someone demands service after time, or has been barred, they should be refused service. Could it possibly be that Mr Evas falls into this category?
