Country pub that manages to combine a traditional layout and atmosphere with smart modern features, to good effect. Two front rooms and a larger back room, both with access to the bar, which appears to be a mock-traditional stonework job. At the rear there is a restaurant which I would think is an extension. The pub has a good reputation for food which I did not try, though it looked good. Modern fittings including a piled carpet and the bar counter help to make it a smart, contemporary place. A lot of the passing trade was diners, but the front rooms seemed to be mainly made up of locals. 2 Adnams beers and Cumberland available on my visit. Adnams is rare in the area so i had a pint of bitter, which was fine. Close to the Rivington/Anglezarke area which makes for good walking. A good all round pub. Carlurmston - 11 May 2009 13:35
Fast becoming one of my favorites, very smart country pub with a good choice of real ales and low idiot count. The friendly bar staff are an added bonus. boltonbloke - 26 Aug 2008 20:56
despite massing this pub scores of times, made first visit 2 weeks ago. pleasantly surprised to see cumberland and adnams bitter on. onlt tried the adams, not impressed though. large pub on corner, nearest to rivington and 15-20 min walk from adlington railway. the_amsterdam_man - 16 Jul 2007 22:30
Traditional, friendly pub with excellent view across to the West Pennine Moors. Would be a good base for a day's walk around the Rivington / Anglezarke area. Had three real ales on the last visit, our 'Cumberland' was in fine form. philmcg - 21 May 2007 11:23
Has improved recently with reasonably priced food cooked on the premises. Always have a couple of cask ales on, which change every so often. Tim Booth - 18 Dec 2004 11:36
