| This place has been taken over by an employee (Sue, i think) from an ealier time when the pub was great, after reading some of the previous bits of feedback I was slightly wary of what i'd find.... and? No Worries at all!.... the beer, food and even the accomodation looks to be back to it's absolute best of a few years ago... well recommended and once more one of my favourite pubs of all time :-) Statesman - 7 Dec 2010 19:46 |
| After reading about this pub in the GBG we stopped off for a pint whilst passing. As previously described by others the pub is in a great location opposite the church and is a nice old pub with plenty of seating inside and out. On entering the row of 18 handpumps is quite impressive but on our visit the range was very disappointing with all the beers being commonly available beers from large breweries, T.Taylor, Black Sheep etc. Beers tried were passable but not at their best. | Situated in a small village off the A65. The pub looks great, very tidy with wood and stone floors. There is an excellent church directly across the road where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was married. Bet you didnt know that. The bar is quite long with sixteen handpumps (only 8 beers and old rosie) and over 200 whiskies. No I am not reading from a brochure. However, here is where glory starts to fade. The beer I tried, Ruskins from the local Kirkby Lonsdale brewery was not the freshest Ive ever had, perhaps just a bad choice. A pub needs to be very busy in order to have 8 real ales on. The food also was not magnificent. The pub is worth visiting. Its very pretty as is the church. Gets a 7. ape_arrody - 4 Aug 2009 11:30 |
| A great pub with a very good selection of ales. The food was ok, pub grub. It was better when the pub wasn't busy. Landlady seemed a little grumpy, not sure why as they seemed to be doing a roaring trade. The bar staff generally were very helpful. | A number of friends booked in here for my partner's 40th birthday this week and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and fine beer choice. There's both a beer yard at the front of the pub and a small garden to the rear and ample seating inside. I suspect the menu is too large and the food was perhaps not as good as it might be (not as good as I remember): perhaps sticking to the specials might be safest.
