| I have lived in an apartment right opposite The Clifden since June this year. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am pleasantly surprised that Graham has not been served with a noise abatement notice my the residents of my building, resulting in the demise of other character pubs such as the Spotted Dog in Digbeth. The Clifden isn't just your ordinary local 'old man' pub - it has a real neighbourhood feel. Most of the people that seem to come here are in their 20s, 30s and 40s - although it's still not the wrong place for someone older! It really is hard to put my finger on what makes this pub so great. The beer garden really is a hidden gem, with that red postbox and old Post Office sign enticing your curiosity about the Jewellery Quarter's past. A few more outdoor heaters wouldn't go amiss now that winter is coming though, Graham! ;-) The food here is great - huge portions, well cooked, better than you might expect if you walked past and saw this place from the outside. If sport is on, or at lunch time, or on Friday and Saturday nights, this place is heaving. One of the things I love so much about this place is the eclectic music - if nobody is controlling the jukebox, you'll hear anything from Elvis to a range of motown, to the Chili Peppers... right the way over to NeYo! It also isn't the kind of locals pub that feels unwelcoming. The first time I went in there, Tommy the bartender and Graham, the owner, chatted to me. I met people from my building too. It really is a friendly place! If you're visiting the Jewellery Quarter, or you've just moved in, head straight to the Clifden! I can promise you, it will be your new favourite place! sparklepop - 14 Nov 2008 10:23 |
| I always make a point of visiting this pub when I'm in the Birmingham area - even if It'm changing trains from New street to Snow Hill. The selection of ales on tap are great and well kept. The HPA is my personal favoutite but I also love the German wheat beers so I was really impressed then they had Maisell's weisse hefe weizen in bottles as it's my favourite German beer from Bayreuth, Paulaner is also on tap. I've eaten there a few times and would highly recommend the food - especially the ribeye steak when the chef has it in. Finally I'd like to say that the refurbishment has totaly transformed the pub, I certainly don't miss the Fagnolia stained walls and my feet sticking to the threadbare carpet and the art on the exposed brick wall adds to the Andy Warhol factory feel. | This is a very 'cool' pub. Does some very nice beer and has a relaxed atmosphere. I would like to return to drink again. However, it is very 'trendy' and upmarket. It is not a 'pubby' pub - if that makes sense. generalstaal - 2 Nov 2008 14:29 |
| I really liked it, although I was the only custtom I enjoyed a very decent Hobsons in a mini-art gallery. Better than the chain pubs half a mile to the east ! mtaylor40 - 16 Oct 2008 20:52 |
| Can I just say with the fiery courage that is available when using a nickname that I preferred this pub before the re-furb? WIth no concession to proof or even accuracy the impression I get is that if the management can't get a pub in Moseley, then Moseley must come to them. Very welcoming and to the new Hockey-ites in their nearby lofts and penthouses - a new emphasis to the description Jewellery Quater perhaps? - with prices to match. But for all of the contemporary Sunday supplement additions of which you happy while away a pint just looking at, something of the pub-of-the-people atmosphere and charm of previous has been lost. But then that's a personal bugbear of mine and this is by no means a bad pub which still knows how to serve a decent pint, and I'll very rarely pass it without popping in. Points for professionalism.
