The Canny Man has a reputation for being a tad upmarket and the owners over-selective about their clientele. Being naturally curious as to what it was like inside, I decided to venture in. Firstly, I waited at the bar to be served for well over 5 minutes. When approched by the rude, snarly, unwelcoming barmaid who greeted me with a dirty look, I was asked what I wanted. I asked for a smile, and as you can imagine this was met with further hostility. I then asked for a whisky and water with ice. It was slammed on the counter. This was the first and last time my feet will ever walk inside the Canny Man's. It's situated on a very busy road with constant traffic fumes, next door to a greasy chip shop and their beer garden is only a few feet away from a public toilet. Delusions of grandeur springs to mind. Best avoided

Interesting warren of a pub whose walls are adorned with a selection of intriguing curios. They always have a wide selection of real ales that are well kept. It is, however, owned by as vile a collection of racists, snobs and disabilists it has ever been my misfortune to encounter. There is nothing quirky, free-thinking or lovably eccentric about refusing service to perfectly behaved people who are guilty of nothing other than deviating from from some arbitrarily defined 'norm'. I hasten to add that I was never turned away but, after witnessing some disgusting treatment of other customers, I resolved never to return. Nothing out out of 10.

If you think it has a cold atmosphere-it is in Morningside! It is unique and well worth the visit. I have had great times there from wakes to job interviews. It used to have Go-Go dancers who nipped in to Greasy Alecs in their breaks and warmed a young cubs heart. Yes, the dust has gone but the curios remain.
Long may it reign.
