character of this pub seems to have changed - it was always a good real ale pub (as a Gales) and though a locals pub was always welcoming. My most recent visit seems to bear out that these qualities have been somewhat lost (unless it was just that evening). Only ale avail was London Pride at £3.00 a pint and it was clean but flavourless - so not sure whats going on there and it wasnt very friendly any more. Lets hope it was a one off.

Pub recently refurbished with main bar in the former public bar area with eating area. Old lounge bar now with pool table facilities. Wide screen TV facilities for Pompey matches.

Good atmosphere with live music over the weekend. Now a Fuller's pub still selling HSB.

Very nice Gales pub with very well kept beer and a large well maintained beer garden.

A local's backstreet local, with very friendly staff and customers. Gale's Best Bitter in good condition, but sadly the Festival Mild was off when I visited on 17/11/04. Dogs welcome. The locals congregate in the public bar, and (not being a dog lover myself) made me feel very relaxed and welcome as a stranger in the pub - so much so that I stayed for another half.

A weekly quiz and occasional live music are staged here.

The pub is listed in the 2005 Camra GBG and is worth a visit.
