This is a nice cosy, friendly pub with a warm welcome and well kept ale. The Harvey's is excellent as is the London Pride and now there's the wonderful Harvey's Old as well.

The staff are friendly and have a ready smile. OK, the food isn't the best in the world but it's perfectly good honest pub fare at a reasonable price.

Anyway, it's a proper pub, not a restaurant with a bar in the corner so I'll keep coming back.

Nice friendly pub, well kept beer plus cheerful bar staff. They usually have a nice open fire burning so a nice place to park your freezing self during the Autumn and Winter months. They do offer food which looks impressive, is on the expensive side and not particularly remarkable. Its possible they've had a change of Chef as their food service used to have more of a flair about it. We had a home made burger and Cottage Pie; both tasted a little on the bland side.

A quick and opportunistic top-off was made here on Saturday morning, early-doors, en route to the rather fine Old Spot Farm Shop a few miles outside of the village. Things were already in session, with 2 or 3 chaps having taken up positions at the bar, enjoying a steady drink - a starter of ten I rather think. The barman was a friendly sort of bloke, and pulled me a superb pint of Harvey's Old. Fuller's London Pride, and Harvey's Best were also on, with a 4th clip reversed - but I suspected a further Harvey's offering. No problem with this, provided they are kept in good form, and the beers here apparently are.

This is a village country local, with all the earthiness and informality of its urban counterpart, but with a little more community focus, a little more charm, and a far more appealing setting. Not an absolute corker, but as an antidote to some of Sussex's perfumed and ponced-up fooderies that pass themselves off as pubs when strictly speaking the term has virtually ceased to be relevant, the Royal Oak will provide a splendid tonic.

Excellent character pub, good beers, very friendly atmosphere with good service. Excellent, good value food served quickly. And David (aged 3) loved the strawberry ice cream!!. Recommended pub for any relaxed and easygoing occasion. Many thanks

At the risk of repeating my comments on the Bull across the road, I find the beer here (Harvey's) in good condition. And yes, you can sit outside overlooking the village green here too!

It's unusual these days to find two pubs side by side in the same village which are equals. In the eyes of a visitor, anyway.

Still, this and the Bull present a good opportunity to compare and contrast the output of Harvey's and Shepherd Neame.
