| 1st visit last night for a celebration dinner (party of 11). Very friendly staff and excellent food, what more could you ask for. Cloakroom very quirky and very clean - worth a visit when needs must....Music great but not over the top or intrudsive - could actually hear ourselves talking while listening. | We've eaten at this pub 3 times in the last month and it's been outstanding every time. The lunchtime menu is a real find, varied menu, plenty of good quality ingredients, well cooked and superbly presented. We needed a 6 mile hike after one lunch before going back for pudding. What's more there's a great selection of draught beer and a local cider which was one of the bets I've tasted. We shall certainly be eating here the next time we're in Kent. | A good pub with a very good selection of local brewed real ales and ciders. Also, a good selection of wines available. Food is ok and nothing special, in my opinion. My only negative would be that they always have two open fires going even if it's a hot sunny day. Very bizarre. It's a bit out of the way but well worth the effort to find. | What a find. I'd normally have overlooked this pub, owing to surfing for pubs using the Good Beer Guide; this place is yet to feature in that tome but certainly is a contender. The rumours on the hop-vine had it that the 5 Bells is a real treat, and so it proved to be: 5 local beers on pump, with the most appealing display I've seen - raised above a series of local produce in jars (chutneys etc) with the specially-brewed Brabourne Stout heralded by a huge clip in the middle. We were greeted by a down-to-earth lady who efficiently took drink and food orders. The Dover sole was recommended by a customer and it proved to be absolutely splendid. Good portions of all dishes and fresh ingredients used throughout. This really is a cracking restaurant as much as pub, but without too many gastro pretensions. Goachers and Gravesend beer also found in well-tended form. The pub's designer is a canny chap and combines modern touches with traditional fittings. A smart pub for smarter people. | Clearly had a full makeover recently. Some interesting ales that change regularly. Our group tried Daemon. Lunches looked good, I opted for a full breakfast, complete with massive mushrooms, great at 2pm. At least a dozen tables occupied, nice to see they are doing well on a Tuesday lunchtime. Roaring fire. Promising large barbecue area and large marquee with decking suggesting plans for warmer evenings. Friendly staff, food v. quick , fresh complete with huge butter slab on crusty toast.
