Great decor, food and general ambience. APPAULING service. Having heard that the service was slow i was heartened to see that someone who looked like he may be some kind of manager greated us - i mistakenly thought that this would mean we would be looked after. We sat with our finshed dirty plates for half an hour before he even approached us to see if we wanted anything else. We had pre ordered but this did not seem to speed up the process at the start either. Its such a shame because this is exactly the kind of place i wuld like to go more often but the service was so under expectaions that i would be embarrassed to recommedn this place to anyone . Such an easily fixed problem. plodder - 17 Jul 2008 15:51
This is a cool charming and pleasnt experience for the intelligent diner. Listen in to locals chatting about the village pond or Horticultural Society chit chat, or sit next to another group and listen to professionals relaxing at the end of a hard week in the City and sharing views on the week's world events and news. In another corner find some young folks with lots of social talk and laughter planning their night out later in the week to Guildford Town centre. The atmosphere in this out of the way pub is eclectice and of course variable but the characters and ambience is interesting for the observant casual visitor. Now for the food, well Thursday to Sunday seems to be a lot better than Monday to Wednesday. The meat is supplied by a local specialist company, menus change fairly often and although occasionaly the chef gets it not quite right at leats she is experimenting, but if you catch one of these you could be mistaken in thinking all the food is at the same standard, the majoity of my experiences here have been very acceptable but then I eat here most weeks! There is a rather drafty double sided fireplace, but on a warm evening its a great place to chill out with friends on the big squashy leather settees. This pub has souls an dlocals and village cheer, enjoy and smile at me I may be the one standing at the bar, cheers. snowdropbooks - 16 Nov 2007 16:58
In a beautiful old building in a picturesque village, tucked away behind quaint little cottages just off the village green, I had high hopes for the White Hart. The old building had been beautifully restored and the décor was immaculate – no corners had been cut when designing the new interiors. Shame that same love and attention didn’t extended to the service. After a drink at the bar we were shown to our table where we ordered from the reasonably priced set menu, although I noted at this point there wasn’t a lot of vegetarian options. We all ordered fish cakes to start followed by the roast beef. After waiting nearly 20 minutes for our starters with noone coming to our table to explain or apologise about the wait, I called the waitress over and asked for some bread. After 10 minutes had passed the bread still hadn’t arrived so I asked another member for some bread, which arrived pretty promptly but was followed pretty quickly with the first waitress bringing another basket – who then rolled her eyes, tutted very loudly, and told me off for ordering off another staff member as she would now have to go and remove one lot from our bill. I though the fact they had added bread to our bill after we had waited so long was bad enough so her rudeness on top of this I found absolutely appalling. When our starters did arrive they were burnt. They had a nice wusabi sauce though. After our first course we had another long wait for our main courses and again no one came over to explain, or even offer us more drinks. When the main courses did arrive, the meat was burnt around the edges, the vegetables were cold, there wasn’t enough potatoes for three people and had a miniscule amount of gravy on my plate and as the meat was so nasty and dry I asked for some more – this then took 10 minutes to arrive by which time everything was cold. Needless to say at the point I had given up. When the waiter came to clear our plates, mine was still full my mum and boyfriend had eaten half, he asked if everything was ok and I started to point out what was wrong, to which he stopped me mid sentence with a filthy look and said “well madam I think you’ll find that’s the first complaint we’ve had all day” and just walked off, no apology, nothing! We had heard the table next to us discuss amongst them selves how appalling the service was so weather they were planning to complain I don’t know. I had visited the white Hart to celebrate my birthday and left feeling father upset at the way we had been treated, it put a real downer on the day. lynzi - 23 Oct 2007 21:57
I have to agree with janeo on our visit we found the place has lost its pubiness and warmness for a cold restaurant feel, its also very pricey.Might work else where but not here. stroller - 13 Jul 2007 13:24
Wow...... anyone wanting some fine fresh food must give this a try. Beautifully refurbished, very friendly staff, a great simple wine list that wont burn a hole in your wallet. They have a different menu during the day, and in the evening have a restaurant style menu with steaks to die for. Its not a huge menu but its all freshly home made, none of this microwave rubbish you find in so many gastro pubs, wich i wont name here. It also has a very nice patio area which, when we finally get the good weather, will be a very peasefull place to dine. You realy must give it a go. D danmurton - 8 Jul 2007 10:20
