First visit to this pub despite living within about a mile for the last 9 and a half years. Firstly the beer - haven't had a pint of McMullen's for donkeys years and so I tried the Country and the AK, both were good though with my bore's hat on I thought the Country too cold. The AK was superb, lovely bitter taste and only 3.7%ABV. The decor is a bit anodyne and tired and the pub lacks atmosphere, the lighting was too bright and it felt like a new pub tacked onto a new estate (Rover's Tye in Colchester - yuk). Didn't eat but the food menu looked interesting with a lot of specials and a fish menu. Visited at around 5.30 on Saturday having had the news of Colchester's last minute defeat at Millwall plus leaving for a 3 week tour of Laos and Vietnam so needed a pint and this was a good one. First comment I made was oh no there's children in the pub, sorry but I'm old fashioned I don't like kids in pubs. Not everything should be family friendly especially pubs and football grounds! 6/10 overall but 9/10 for the beer. Monkdawallydahonk - 31 Oct 2009 19:13
Typical chain pub with standard chain pub food. Nothing wrong with it, but really better suited to a family with children. Very popular for Sunday lunch - get in early! villageidoit - 26 Mar 2009 10:11
I am beginning to wonder if I qualify to write for “Beer in the Evening”, as all my reviews so far relate to midday visits! Anyway, my assessment is along the lines of the other recent contributors; pleasant atmosphere, the AK well worth drinking and at the correct temperature, and a wide selection of food on the menu appropriately priced, efficiently and speedily served, and pleasant to eat. We went in sharp on midday, which I assume would help with the latter. The place was full by 1.15pm on Sunday with families, and the car park overflowing. I’d definitely go back if in the area. Happily I didn't see the McDonald's to which Greshon referred (10 Feb 2008)- perhaps it has got indigestion and gone? pubsampler - 8 Mar 2009 14:31
Nice enough building but real ales of any quality note were not in evidence. A good enough selection of other drinks and the staff were friendly and efficient. The place had a bit of a "hotel lobby" type atmosphere but it was fairly quiet so might be better when busier. I amagine the garden in Summer is pretty good too - it's massive, pretty and seems well looked-after. I don't give ratings by food (beer website an' all) but I ate here too and wasn't that impressed. Standard stodge really. arctral - 21 Jan 2009 17:10
Well the place could not have been too bad, we went back. The AK is still at the right temperature, and is still kept very well. The food and service is also still very good, in spite of all the tables being occupied. Also with a couple of large Office Christmas groups. A pub well worth taking a look at. Being relatively local, we will probably be back again. Phantom_Pigeon - 22 Dec 2008 11:51
