| Absolutely agree with Colin64. Whilst I empathise with Monkdawallydahonk's comments about kids in pubs, I've never seen any badly behaved ones in the White Horse and in these days of pubs closing down weekly surely it's a good thing that they're brought up to understand and take advantage of what a ( good ) pub represents to a community so that as many as possible remain open for the next generation of ale drinkers ? lilchris - 26 Feb 2011 01:58 |
| We live in Hemel and visit this pub fairly regularly. The barstaff are friendly and the pub is well run by Grenville and Pauline. We always dine here when we visit and that has been mostly Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime and the food is always superb and, in my opinion, better than some up market restaurants. There's always a good fish menu as well. The AK is the best cask ale and a nice smooth well kept pint. Would certainly recommend - one of the best pubs for in eating in the area. | A fairly bog standard family pub with 2 real ales from McMullen (AK & Country Bitter) and little or no character. The place was fairly busy late on a Sunday lunchtime with production line food being delivered to eager diners. But this is not a place I would recommend. Even a few pictures on the walls might add a bit of atmosphere. blue_scrumpy - 11 Apr 2010 21:33 |
| First visit to this pub despite living within about a mile for the last 9 and a half years. Firstly the beer - haven't had a pint of McMullen's for donkeys years and so I tried the Country and the AK, both were good though with my bore's hat on I thought the Country too cold. The AK was superb, lovely bitter taste and only 3.7%ABV. The decor is a bit anodyne and tired and the pub lacks atmosphere, the lighting was too bright and it felt like a new pub tacked onto a new estate (Rover's Tye in Colchester - yuk). Didn't eat but the food menu looked interesting with a lot of specials and a fish menu. Visited at around 5.30 on Saturday having had the news of Colchester's last minute defeat at Millwall plus leaving for a 3 week tour of Laos and Vietnam so needed a pint and this was a good one. First comment I made was oh no there's children in the pub, sorry but I'm old fashioned I don't like kids in pubs. Not everything should be family friendly especially pubs and football grounds! 6/10 overall but 9/10 for the beer. Monkdawallydahonk - 31 Oct 2009 19:13 |
| Typical chain pub with standard chain pub food. Nothing wrong with it, but really better suited to a family with children. Very popular for Sunday lunch - get in early! villageidoit - 26 Mar 2009 10:11 |
