Roadside pub on an A road. The 3 or 4 customers at the bar were far outweighed by the large family that appeared to have recently taken over the pub and were considering what modifications they would ideally make, whilst the pub dog was eager to play with a tennis ball. Two Penzance beers were on offer - Jolly Farmer & Tater Du. Seems to have a reputation for food. But they weren't serving any on our visit. I wasn't particularly impressed. blue_scrumpy - 13 Jan 2012 20:53

We were regulars at the Falmouth Packet under the previous owners and were so happy that the pub was re-opening again. Unfortunately, our three visits so far have been very disappointing, but perhaps that because we were looking for the things we loved about the old Packet that just aren't there anymore. The new owners are obviously keen to make a go of it as a 'gastro-pub' but it is now definetly more of a restaurant inside of a pub. Don't expect to be welcomed if you would like to stop by just for a pint, even if you do take a look at the menu. As a couple of the previous reviewers confirmed you need to book ahead and be ready to eat (quickly). The food is fantastic but I'm afraid it just couldn't make up for the service which was either snappy or hovering depending on how long you were taking over a course and whether you wanted to settle on a pint and a packet of crisps. There have been quite a few occasions where we, or friends of ours may have spent a civilised few hours spending our money there, but were made to feel so unwelcome that the visits only lasted a few minutes. The Packet used to be one of the best pubs on the south coast as far as everyone we know is concerned. Friendly, attractive with great 'grub' to suit all tastes and fantastic beer. The choices and the menu have undoubtedly gone up in the world but we won't be going back after fifteen years of spending a good deal of time in the place and neither will a lot of the people who were so fond of the old Packet. We did give change a good try, but we'll be making the treck down to the Victoria Inn from now on. Loads farther, but you won't get snapped at, and you can get really fancy pub grub if you want, but you don't HAVE to! I should say, I've got no affliation to the Victoria, but if you're looking for a decent pint in almost walking distance that's your nearest bet now. EDonovan - 5 Aug 2010 15:52
Booked Sunday lunch (June 27) by phone the day before and were delighted with whole experience. Both 'unique' Penzance Beers were very good and lime and sodas for the driver were only 50p each. The roast beef lunch was excellent; beef (the new owners have a farm) was some of the best we've tasted in a pub; service was very friendly and welcoming. We live in 'rip-off' county, plagued with too many poor value gastropubs (Surrey) so were pleased to find such great value and tasty food. We hope the new owners make it a great success, they are on the right track - we hope to be back when we visit Cornwall next year! chymron - 11 Jul 2010 11:59
