A much better pub than the previous reviews had led me to expect. The barman greeted us with a nice line in cheerful humour and served up a cracking pint of Joules Slumbering Monk (also on offer were Blonde and Pale Ale from the same stable). Food - my wife had sandwiches and I a panini - was plentiful and tasty. Unlike other pubs of similar vintage - it is over 400 years old - the interior, including the wooden floor, mantelpiece and the cushioned settles, were in keeping with the age of the building. Great eclectic music selection too.

Unpretentious pub to put it mildly, but not necessarily a lot wrong with that. Certainly far fewer punters in here on a warm Saturday than at the Buck's Head over the road. Several of the few drinkers were out the back in the small but tidy beer garden. Dart board a shade close to the beer garden door.
The Buck's Head beer garden was well-populated.
Top notch couple of pints of Timmy Taylor's Landlord. Bombardier also on tap, but nothing exotic. Nobody eating while I was in there, but there is a great cafe just over the road.
Gents bog was very clean.

Nice pub frequented by locals and walkers alike.
Take no notice of the earlier againstyobbery post. It's the landlord from the Bucks Head who is upset that the Kings food is better and cheaper. They do it all the time in the Bucks, slag off and spread rumours about the other pubs in the town and generally cause mischief when it is not needed. Come in and make up your own mind.

Had an acceptable Timmy Taylors on when I visited recently. I found the pub friendly and unthreatening for a single female of a certain age even on a Saturday night. Does simple bar meals during the day (untried). Unpretentious interior, which appeals to me, at least it's still a pub not a restaurant. I was going to swerve by the pub when I saw the previous reviews, but as I was staying across the road for the weekend it was too handy not to try it.

A pretty basic pub with no good real ale or any redeeming features. Go to the Bucks Head over the road instead.
