No longer a pub: converted to business premises. The 'Old Colonial' is now just a destination on the Birkenhead Tramway!

Went past the OC over the last couple of days and the place appears to have closed despite a big plastic banner saying "Now Fully Open"! This isn't a surprise as the place has been going down the pan for a year or three.

I'd not been in for a year or so, I used to go to the trad jazz session regularly a few years back (after the more diverse Jazz sesh moved from the much-missed Bar57, now 2a PriceSt). Anyway trad jazz isn't my favourite music, but it was a friendly bustling pub, with pretty decent beer.

As you say FDIYG, it seems pot luck whether this place or The Dizzie is open at all, on evidence a couple of weeks ago, it was somewhere between open & closed. 2 staff, 2 friends & me! Beer was on the turn, atmosphere was long gone, there was however a good BBC drama on the somewhat knackered widescreen telly!

The Dispensary itself was indeed, fully closed, but is now open again - does this mean the OC is now closed ;~)

Cain's now own an additional 100 or so pubs, after a "reverse takeover" of a NW pubco - the running of these 2 places don't bode well, but we'll see.

More managers than Charlton Athletic of late. Last visited with a mate between Xmas and New Year. Ale was like dishwater and the food wasn't on. Bored barmaid and customers you could count on the fingers of one hand. Gives traditional pubs a bad name. I hope that it's improved but frankly I don't want to waste any more time (or money) finding out.
