This might be the finest pub in the world, with the best beer and food. Unfortunately, we'll never get to know. Visiting around 6.00 pm on a Tuesday evening it was impossible to get served - the staff seemed to be busy either arguing over a bill or popping in and out of the kitchen washup area - so we had to go elsewhere for food and drink. Still, if Wetherspoons don't want money from their customers, I suppose it's very kind of them to provide a waiting area for the buses for free. fawkescat - 1 Feb 2012 12:15
Quite an interesting Spoons, went on Sat 19th Nov about 1ish and it was fairly full, mainly with lager drinkers and when I stood at the hand-pulls at the far end, had to start waving to the four staff who were stood at the other end of the bar. Coach House - Blueberry and George Wright - Blue Moon in here for me, I ended up laying back against the wooden panelling opposite the hand-pulls, pint on a small table near the fruit machines. Still better than the Welkin or Richard John Blacker, my second visit here having been in in January with a mate, I was alone on this visit, the atmosphere so boring, I stuck my earphones in and listened to music on my phone. tommotraveller - 27 Nov 2011 13:45
I believe this is the last of the city centre Wetherspoons I was yet to visit, until yesterday. It was better than I expected, given some of the reviews on here. The interior is a little dark, but is still quite pleasant and there is plenty of seating On a Saturday morning, it was fairly busy. There seemed to be a queueing system in operation at one end of the bar. But when asking the person at one end of the queue if they were at the front or at the back, they said I'd get served anywhere. 8 handpulls were in use. Although I'm not sure how many of these beers were really available and Ruddles Best was on 2 different pumps. Certainly, when I asked for one of the 4 ciders in the fridges, following an initial blank look and a request to repeat my order, it appeared the Mr Whiteheads Cirrus Minor box was empty. Why keep an empty box in the fridge? Instead I opted for Broadoak Perry. Equally I could have gone for Westons Marcle Hill or Vintage Organic. Beers supposedly on were Brains Reverend James, Ossett Pale Ale, Otter Mild, Peerless Hop Nob & Full Whack, Ruddles Best & Greene King Abbot Ale. Better than I had anticipated. But nothing to single it out for special praise. blue_scrumpy - 8 May 2011 12:59
I was right about it getting trashed after the refurbishment! The gents toilets are now a disgrace. And this place still suffers the same problem as in past that people queue at the end of the bar nearest to the entrance (that's right - they queue) to order their tea, coffee and food; while at the other end of the bar (next to the toilets) where the handpumps are is understaffed. This isn't very good considering they (Wetherspoons/Lloyds) are having one of their beer festivals! I waited over 5 minutes to get served a pint of (forgotten the name) Swedish real ale, while people at the other end of the bar got served their tea, coffee, ready meals and blue WKD in no time! mattbeer - 30 Mar 2011 23:53
Has been renovated - new carpets, tables and chairs etc. Still dark and dull inside and usual slow service. Have been in there twice in recent weeks and asked for a pint of Thatchers Gold cider - clearly marked by the Stella - only to receive a blank stare! They still serve 3 ales on tap but they are hidden away at the far end of the bar. I can't see the new furnishings lasting long considering the type of people that usually come to this place! mattbeer - 3 Oct 2010 11:29
