| I found a postcard amongst my Grandmother's belongings from her grandmother sent to her in ± 1901. It has a picture of The Owl - High Beech. The the back is written - "Grandpapa and Uncle George walked to the "Owl" yesterday - it is a funny old place over hundred years old and is liked for its good beer. All send fondest love to you .......etc" Her grandparents lived in Loughton at the time and my grandmother lived in Victoria Province, Rhodesia - she would have been about 3 yrs old. | The 'Don't tease the water otter' sign is a joke. At one time there was an old water cistern (full of water) with a chain running into the water. At the end of the chain was a kettle (a 'water (h)otter'). Lame joke. But, as the previous writer pointed out, great views. Bauman - 24 Jun 2007 09:25 |
| Set on top of a verdant hill above the forest, there has been a pub on this site for centuries, though the current incarnation was built in the 1960s after the last one was demolished becauise it was unsafe. Serves decent food and the beer garden affords excellent views over Epping Forest below. And what is with that 'Don't tease the water otter' sign? Greshon - 16 Feb 2007 09:40 |
| A very nice pub in a pleasant location. Particularly nice in the summer months. lauriepage4 - 23 Oct 2006 22:10 |
| A lovely pub, in a very pleasant rural location. The Mullens beers are well kept, and the food not too bad either. Even in the depths of Winter, it is a warm welcoming place, and the perfect way to break up a walk in Epping Forest. A genuine local country pub, within the M25. Stoff - 6 Mar 2006 09:41 |
