Perhaps we stumbled onto a private party, but the landlord was most unwelcoming. Beer fine. Certainly will not be rushing back here,

Five Years On, not much had changed (thankfully) it's still a great traditional Pub. Our American friends who we took along for the first time, loved The Pub, The View, The Village, Nidderdale and Yorkshire ! Look forward to calling in again when next walking the Scar House/Angram Circuit.

Called in on a circular walk from Scar House reservoir, clockwise on the tops. On a very sunny day, the four handpumps were a very welcome sight - Black Sheep Bitter and their new Golden Sheep, also two Wensleydale Brews, one brewed specially for the Crown and the magnificent Semer Water - just the job on a hot day! Wonderful traditional pub in superb location.

The last pub in Niddersdale in a small hilltop village where the tarmaced road ends and becomes the Niddersdale Way footpath. A very traditional old pub, - the use of plastic payment is frowned upon. Good Blacksheep bitter and Golden Sheep along with some ordinary kegs. A fine collection of pumpclips suggests other beers are sometimes available. Two room set up with the servery in the main room and a comfortable seating and eating area to the side. Decorated in the traditional no nonsense fashion for dales pubs. Interesting photos of the now demolished village built at nearby Scar House dam to house the construction workers and their families. One oddity is the exhaust pipe over the fire.

A quintessential Dales pub, surrounded by stone cottages and cobbled streets in a pretty hillside village, seven miles from Pateley Bridge. The Crown has three cosy, low ceilinged rooms, two of which have stoves. The main bar is stone flagged.

Dating from the 18th century, it was a shooting lodge in a previous life.

Just Black Sheep Bitter and Special when we called. The Special was clean tasting and fresh, but a little cold for my taste. However, it was such a relief to have an alternative to the omnipresent BSB.
Food tended to be traditional pub fare served in huge portions. Quality variable, but undoubtedly good value.

The landlord and the young waitress were friendly and attentive, but a young shaven headed barman was off-hand and abrupt.

A relaxed and chatty atmosphere when we called early Saturday evening.

Benches in front of the pub offer fine views down Nidderdale, towards Gouthwaite reservoir.
Obviously popular as a finishing point for fell walkers visiting the area, ourselves included.
Accomodation available.
