The Chequers has a great village location. But as usual, successive makeovers have spoilt the character of the pub. The bar area was packed with locals watching the rugby. So we opted for the lounge area which we had to ourselves. The restaurant appeared busy. Cask ales available were all from the Greene King range - IPA, Abbot Ale and Ridleys Old Bob. We much preferred the Old Queen's Head up the road in Aldham, which unfortunately is not listed here. blue_scrumpy - 15 Feb 2010 09:59
Bob's pies are pretty good, but the rest of the food is not up to much. Looks like they trying to be trendy & clever, but the quality of the ingredients and of the cooking does not fulfill the promises. Waiting staff in restaurant are friendly. Bar staff not always as welcoming as one would like. Decor updated nicely, which was long overdue, but cleanliness is a real issue. All in all, was okay, but won't be rushing back. Better food and welcome at the Dolphin in Stisted and the Thatchers in Bures. VillageResident - 22 Oct 2009 15:03
I found the Chequers several years ago when I had a shoot in the area, not much to report. I was in the area again with the wife and kids and its had a make over! I see a New Landlord has brought a new feel, food was good with plenty for the kids to choose from, I was driving but managed to have 1/2 Speck Hen which was creamy and just at the right temperature. Look forward to been a regular! ShaunHaigh - 10 Jun 2009 14:07
