I am pleased kevin ward and his family had a pleasant experience with polite staff. It just shows how staff vary from one day to the next. I hope though that when he definitely returns , he doesn't get the same staff that C Moore and family , and my family and I got on our visit, because it will leave a very taste in his mouth if he does. martianpoolwoman - 14 Feb 2011 15:51
I found the last 2 reviews amazing !!! Went today with my wife and in-laws and all of us had a lovely meal. The steak and kidney in gravy, with mash and veg was to die for,and my wifes fish and chips were also superb, and the portions were very generous indeed. The young girl who served us was very polite, and the bar staff also polite and helpful, despite it being busy. All in all a very pleasant visit, and we shall return in the near future Kevin_Ward - 24 Oct 2010 21:54
I must admit I have to agree with ccmoore in his review regarding the manners and attitude of the staff . I took my husband and son for there for sunday lunch ONCE for my husband 's birthday and was astonished at the rudeness of the waiting on staff . I asked what was the soup of the day only to be told ''how do you expect me to know .'' !!!!!!!!! I don;t think my question was unreasonable when faced the general term ''soup of the day'' . I asked what meat was on the sunday roast only to be snapped at . ''Questions questions ..I suppose you want me to find that out too .'' Well yes basically ..I do . My only consolation in being faced with paying for such rudeness , is that I have NEVER been back and have told people about the level of rudeness here , which is obviously losing it a significant amount of takings . Their own fault . martianpoolwoman - 7 Jul 2010 18:57
As a group of 6 people who have visited this pub on Christmas Eve and other occasions over the last 20 years for lunches and to enjoy the atmosphere, we have decided today this will be our last visit. Due to poor service and inedible food (raw meat and I dont mean rare) when returning the food and asking for it to be cooked further, the attitude of the staff was one of couldn't be bothered. When reminding the staff that the food still had not come back from the kitchen we were accused of already eating it. At this point two of the party still had not received their meals and I asked for a refund for my meal. mine was not the only meal to be returned The land lady needs to look hard at the attitude of staff and the customer service, their job is to cook food to the requirements of the customer and not pass comments like "we dont cremate food here" when asked for well done. Maybe an apology would have been appropriate rather than a refund but unfortunately was not received. ccmoore - 24 Dec 2009 17:07
I can see why some people find it a bit up-market but it is genuinely welcoming to all-comers - try sitting in the tap room to the left of the main entrance. An excellent all-round pub of great character with good beer and food. Heatonian - 27 Jun 2009 22:24
